About the Item

Wiggle No.6 (Abstract painting) Oil on Paper (Arches Oil Paper — 140 lb Cold press) — Unframed. This work is exclusive to IdeelArt. Leon Phillips is a Canadian artist who experiments with the materiality of colour, displaying its structural rather than merely decorative function. Based in Vancouver, Phillips grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, exploring nature and its shades. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a second degree in Environmental Studies. His art practice shows a physical engagement in colour properties and his studio’s working tools. Brushes, pigments, and the artist’s own body are never inert materials: they collaborate to create dynamic and swirling objects. Phillips’ paintings have been exhibited in several public galleries in Canada and USA and have been awarded by the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2021, he also participated in the “Mark Rothko” International Painting Symposium in Latvia (Europe), becoming part of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre's permanent collection. Leon Phillips’ paintings are more than colourful and abstract images: they are tangible presences.

Groove 35, Abstract Painting
By Gary J. Noland Jr.
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
An intricate modern abstract painting in coordinated bands of color and texture, balancing intuition and planning. Part of artist Gary J. Noland Jr.'s new series composed of many layers of acrylic paint that have been smeared, scraped, scratched and sanded to reveal a variety of colors and images. "The surface provides a harmonious balance, which references the struggle between chaos and order and hard-edged borders versus organic non-defined forms of expression, reflective of today's society," explains Gary. "The "Groove" is the way we must continue to move on regardless of life...

Abstract Pop Art Oil Painting: 'Zip 1'
By Carol John
Located in New York, NY
Carol John's art reflects her encounters with mainstream modern artists-showing the obvious influence of Guston and other individualists like Marsden Hartley and Alfred Julio Jensen-it also suggests an appreciation of certain 'outsider' artists, as with her improvisational approach to composition. Like quilters of Gee Bend, John often begins a work with little idea of where it will take her pictorially. She might find a composition’s repeating pattern needs to be squeezed to fit within a pictures margins or detoured around a corner for completion as if the papers edge were merely a slight obstacle. In their unrestricted manner, the paintings have much more in common with childhood doodles, mindless of convention and heedless of expectations. that is not to say they are directionless. Guided by insight, they recall the paintings of visionary artists like Howard Finster or J.B Murray...
