Leonardo Nierman
Leonardo Nierman is a Mexican abstract artist. His varied paintings and sculptures are inspired by both nature and classical musicians like Johann Sebastian Bach and Claude Debussy, as well as an array of artists that includes David Alfaro Siqueiros, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joan Miró. Nierman’s paintings utilize bright colors and evoke elemental natural events like volcanic eruptions, storms, and waterfalls. In the same vein, his sculptures often depict abstracted sublime representations of angelic figures and flames. Born on November 1, 1932 in Mexico City, Mexico to Lithuanian and Ukrainian parents, Nierman studied the violin from a very young age before receiving a BA in business administration from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Today, the artist’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Detroit Institute of the Arts, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others. Nierman lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico.

- Israeli Motke Blum Modernist Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting Bezalel ArtistBy Motke BlumLocated in Surfside, FLMotke Blum was born in Racacun, Romania in 1925. Early in his childhood, the Blum family moved to Bucharest where they settled in a house situated near a circus. The circus would become young Blum's greatest love. He befriended several of the clowns and other performers and, when not painting or playing in clay, Blum could be found enjoying the company of these spirited entertainers. These experiences would later become a recurring theme in many of his works of art. In 1938, he was taken by the Romanian Iron Guard. When the Germans invaded Romania, Blum was taken to a forced labor camp. Even during his imprisonment, he continued to create art, painting on the walls of the camp. He escaped the Nazi camp in 1944 and boarded an immigrants' ship to Israel. One of the three ships in the convoy was sunk by a German torpedo. Motke later incorporated shipwrecks, boats, and other maritime subjects into several of his paintings. Studies, Bezalel, Jerusalem, Enamel, Silversmithing, Painting and Sculpture. 1956 Seminar in the dep. of design in the royal silver factory of Zeist, The Netherlands. Over the course of his long and fruitful career, Blum showed internationally at over fifty one-man-shows with exhibits in Israel, Holland, England, Belgium, the United States, France, Australia, and more. - Ukrainian Israeli Woman Bezalel Artist 1947 Palestine Landscape Oil PaintingLocated in Surfside, FLAbstract landscape, oil painting This is hand signed lower right dated 1947 There is also a hand written inscription in french lower left. Moussia Toulman ( 1903-1997), Artist and poet, was born in Uman Ukraine (famed as the tomb site of Chassidic Rebbe Nachman of Breslov) and came to Israel (British mandate Palestine) when she was 19 years old. Just a few months after her arrival she married, settled in Metula however, she didn’t forgo her ambition to study art. In 1923 she enrolled to study at the Bezalel Art Institute in Jerusalem and completed her studies there in 1926. Like Ziona Tagar, who preceded her a few years earlier, Moussia Toulmann chose to become an artist-woman in the full significance of the term. She wasn’t satisfied with the local studies framework that was available and chose to continue her studies in Paris, France which at that time was considered the art capital. From 1929 onwards Musia lived in Paris, studied art and joined the ‘Independent Salon’ society. She made contacts with artists and writers and exhibited during the 1930’s in a number of select group exhibitions. In 1936 Tolman visited Israel and forged bonds with artists she studied with at Betzalel, among them Aharon Avni, Gliksberg and Avigdor Stematsky. She exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1936 in a group exhibition with Aharon Avni, Arie Aroch, Yosef Zaritsky, Mordechai Levanon, Eliyahu Sigad, Chaya Schwartz, and Yehezkel Streichman. She painted landscapes and portraits and presented one of the works she painted in Paris to the Tel Aviv museum. It was a portrait of the poet and art critic Gustave Kahn who had died the same year. Moussia returned to Paris and exhibited a one-man show just before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the war all the works she exhibited in this exhibition were lost without a trace and Moussia Toulman herself wandered around France moving from one hiding place to another. After the war, in 1946 Moussia Toulman continued painting but was reluctant to exhibit her works. She became a well-known public figure and volunteered for aid programmes for Holocaust survivors, especially orphans. Later on she founded together with Mane Katz, Jacques Atlan and other artists the ‘Art’ organization with the object of developing cultural ties with Israel and to aid Israeli artists during their stay in Paris. In addition to painting Moussia Toulman wrote poetry, published articles and was involved in art criticism. She was included in the rare publication of 'Association des artistes, peintres et sculpteurs juifs de France' in French and Yiddish. The School of Paris Jewish artists included Edmond Kayser, Abram Krol, Meyer Lazar, David Lan-Bar, Jacques Lipchitz, Jacques Loutchansky, Lubitch, Rene Mendes-France, Adolphe Milich, Lea Nikel, Jules Pascin, David Peretz, Camille Pissarro, Nathan Rapoport, Moussia Toulman, Roger Worms...Category

- Large Hudson River Figurative Modernist Landscape Oil Painting Edward AvedisianBy Edward AvedisianLocated in Surfside, FLEdward Avedisian ( 1936-2007 ) Gouache or oil on paper, 3 guys around a car, hand signed in paint lower left, Measures 30"x 22.5" Edward Avedisian (June 15, 1936, Lowell, Massachusetts – August 17, 2007, Philmont, New York) was an American abstract painter who came into prominence during the 1960s. His work was initially associated with Color field painting and in the late 1960s with Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism. He studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. By the late 1950s he moved to New York City. Between 1958 and 1963 Avedisian had six solo shows in New York. In 1958 he initially showed at the Hansa Gallery, then he had three shows at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery and in 1962 and 1963 at the Robert Elkon Gallery. He continued to show at the Robert Elkon Gallery almost every year until 1975. During the 1960s his work was broadly visible in the contemporary art world. He joined the dynamic art scene in Greenwich Village, frequenting the Cedar Tavern on Tenth Street, associating with the critic Clement Greenberg, and joining a new generation of abstract artists, such as Darby Bannard, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, and Larry Poons. Avedisian was among the leading figures to emerge in the New York art world during the 1960s. An artist who mixed the hot colors of Pop Art with the cool, more analytical qualities of Color Field painting, he was instrumental in the exploration of new abstract methods to examine the primacy of optical experience. One of his paintings was appeared on the cover of Artforum, in 1969, his work was included in the 1965 Op Art The Responsive Eye exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and in four annuals at the Whitney Museum of American Art. His paintings were widely sought after by collectors and acquired by major museums in New York and elsewhere. He has been exhibited in prominent galleries, such as the Anita Shapolsky Gallery and the Berry Campbell Gallery in New York City. Edward Avedisian was known for his brightly colored, boldly composed canvases that combined Minimalism's rigor, Pop art exuberance and the saturated tones of Color Field painting. Roberta Smith of the NYT writes of Avedesian: "Edward Avedisian helped establish the hotly colored, but emotionally cool, abstract painting that succeeded Abstract Expressionism in the early 1960s. This young luminary harnessed elements of minimalism, pop, and color field painting to create prominent works of epic proportions that energized the New York art scene of the time." In 1996 Avedisian showed his paintings from the 1960s at the Mitchell Algus Gallery, then in SoHo. His last show, dominated by recent landscapes, was in 2003 at the Algus gallery, now in Chelsea. Selected Exhibitions: Op Art: The Responsive Eye, at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum’s Young America 1965 Expo 67, held in Montreal, Canada.
