About the Item
Lester Rapaport
Robin’s Passing, painted in 2015 is composed of an atmospheric sprayed background and a central paint dripped spirit figure. Rapaport has been playing with dripped acrylic paint on and off since 1971. The series “a new chapter 2013-2018 “grew out of a response to his Mother’s sudden and unexpected death in 2008. At once he again began to drip paint with a large brush, this time in an act of mourning.
While painting/mourning, he developed a visual vocabulary that as he painted through this grieving period has become the essence of his work since 2012.
Lester Rapaport studied art at Hunter College from 1963-1969, achieving dual degrees in painting, studying-with Tony Smith, Ralph Humphrey, and Robert Morris.
In 1991 he began to meditate, which blossomed into a serious spiritual practice. And it has become the other ingredient along with the love of abstraction that continues to inspire his painting.
