Dragonfish, 2021, surreal abstract oil on canvas painting, measuring 36 inches high by 26 inches wide by 1.5 inches deep. This piece is exemplary of the artist's abstract surrealist series of work that is inspired by cosmology, myths and surreality. Many pieces in this series have a surreal, dreamlike, visionary quality. Here the artist imagines a cosmic sea creature -- with traces of crustacean, fish, dragon, seahorse and sea anemone. The rendering is biomorphic and organic and surreal all at once, and is rendered in saturated and vivid color tones -- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black and iridescent pearly white. The artist's biomorphic abstractions are a cosmic and visionary expression of a world that stimulate the viewer's imagination.

For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe.
