Nothing predestined the man nicknamed the “painter butcher” for art. Born in 1920 in Fumel, Lot-et-Garonne, Louis Carmeil, the son of a butcher, trained as a butcher with his father. He had no formal training in art, and began painting as a self-taught artist in 1955, at the age of thirty-five. His painting enabled him to transcend the reality of his daily life and express his sensibility. He devoted himself entirely to it from 1968 onwards.
Louis Carmeil produced an elaborate, unique body of work, totally free from the trends of his time. Ambiguous, suggestive forms emerge from the pictorial material. They subtly evoke flesh and muscle in a contained eroticism charged with mystery.
A raw artist whose transgressive practice was destined to remain private, Louis Carmeil's work came to public attention in the 1970s: in galleries (Vence, Galerie Chave) and museums (Paris, Centre Pompidou and the city's Museum of Modern Art).
