About the Item
Lourdes Rivera was born in New York City in 1989, where she currently lives and works. She is a first generation Dominican-American. Lourdes considers herself bi-cultural, but uncommonly, not because she has adopted one culture from her parents and was born into the other. She was shuffled, mixed, stirred and shaken into being both by living in both places interchangeably for a large part of her life, a common theme of her work. Lourdes’ series Relative Perspective which dealt with issues of identity was mentioned in the Long Island City Times Ledger in April, 2014, and she is currently expanding on a new series, Retrospect, this work takes a look back at the decisions, and choices made through out 2014. Her work often, is a harmonization, and bringing together of unique parts, representing ideals, convictions, and beliefs. Retrospect is currently showing in the Dr. M. T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery and in the ODETTA Gallery flat files.
Lourdes' work focuses on investment on individuality, the importance of such in respective social groups and the extent of its importance when in different cultural settings. The Retrospect series ties into this common thread of her work. The series takes a look back at 2014, having been a testing year. The question “what is most correct?” came to mind, having often dealt with this through out her life and always having two perspectives. Each piece has two sides each side a completely different image, which would not be the fully realized version of itself if the image on the opposing side was not present.
Being the only member of her family who was born in the United States and that has lived interchangeably in both, constant misunderstanding of ideologies are present in both her worlds. Her work is trying to harmonize differences, respectfully giving reverence to each part or piece involved. Her goal is to physically bring together, and to make connections, to form individual, unique, entities in their own right.
