Toshio Sekiji
Subcontinent, Woven Newspaper Wall Hanging by Toshio Sekiji

1998

About the Item

Materials: Red, green, black, natural lacquer, Hindi (Delhi) and Malayalam (Kerala State) newspapers. This artwork is framed in a maple wood shadowbox with Optium Museum plexiglass. Toshio Sekiji’s works are made of newspapers from Japan and India and is exemplary of the traditional Japanese aesthetic, wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection and utilizes organic and weathered textures and objects that mimic nature. In weaving together newspapers from two or more different areas, Sekiji is metaphorically bonding cultures that may have a combative history or traditionally conflicting ideologies. His newspaper tapestries showcase the things that opposing sides share in common and shed light on the political and social struggles between cultures in a specific moment in time.
