Born in Pordenone, Italy in 1926, Luigi Boille was an Italian artist who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. After moving to Paris in 1950, he became associated with the nascent Art Informel movement, inspired by the writings of the influential French critic Michel Tapié. He was represented by the renowned Galerie Stadler in Paris for nearly 15 years, which he was the peak of his artistic output. His association with Stadler and Tapié paid huge dividends for Boille during the 1960s. He showed in important exhibitions ranging from North America to Asia. In 1964, together with Giuseppe Capogrossi, Enrico Castellani, and Lucio Fontana, he represented Italy at the Guggenheim International Award in New York. He also participated in the Quadriennale in Rome in 1965 and 2011, and had a solo presentation of paintings at the 33rd Venice Biennale of Art in 1966. Since the major retrospective Luoghi di luce, scritture del silenzio, held at the Musei di Villa Torlonia in Rome in 2019, Boille's work has been the subject of renewed interest by some of the most esteemed galleries in the world. Ronchini Gallery, London, presented a solo exhibition of his work at Frieze Masters 2021, followed in 2023 by a major exhibition held in London, Luigi Boille: Early Works. Earlier in the year, Boille was part of the seminal exhibition Roma/New York, 1953-1964, presented by David Zwirner in New York. That exhibition included some of the most significant names in 20th century art: Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Tobey, and Cy Twombly, among others. Luigi Boille died in Rome in 2015. His work can be found in many significant public and private collections around the world, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington; the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rome; MAM Paris; and MACRO, Rome.

Luigi Boille
Luigi Boille was born in Pordenone in 1926. He lived and studied in Rome, where he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Architecture in 1950. He often traveled around Europe and, after a short stay in Holland, he settled in Paris in 1951, where he stayed until 1965. Today, he lives in Rome. Boille's purpose is to make a painting, only painting, possibly the purest painting. The career path of Boille is marked by three important meetings: Paris, and its cultural environment; meeting with Michel Tapie, who offered him an artistic adventure and professional insert into the French and international contexts; meeting with Giulio Carlo Argan, who led him to the conceptual essence of painting and its bond with Italian renewal. In these years, Boille's works fully take possession of matter, diluting colors with turpentine, inflaming them with gas, controlling the extension and intensity of the burn and the changes of color in contact with the flame. Sometimes, the artist had to bathe colors to avoid burning the burlap. Anyways, the study blackened, turning into what most resembles a spectacular Volcano cave.

Theodore Franklin (“Ted”) Appleby, Jr. was born January 28, 1923 in Asbury Park, New Jersey to a very prominent family in Monmouth County. He attended the Pauling School in New York and studied at the atelier of John Corneal.
On December 12, 1942, Appleby enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, subsequently seeing action in the Marshall Islands. Upon the conclusion of the war, he was stationed for a year in Yokohama, Japan, where he studied local engraving techniques.
In 1947, after returning home, Appleby moved to Mexico for a year to study mural painting in San Miguel de Allende. Following his sojourn in Mexico, Appleby briefly returned home to the U.S. before ultimately relocating to Paris. There, he joined a lively community of expatriate American artists involved with what would come to be known as the “School of Paris.” Appleby befriended fellow Americans Sam Francis and Jackson Pollock, exhibiting extensively throughout France with the former. He also regularly visited the atelier of Fernand Léger, and was represented in the "Salon de Réalités Nouvelles" and the “Salon d’Automne” during the 1950s and 60s.
From 1955 to 1961, Appleby participated in group exhibitions in Chicago, Leverkusen (Germany), Lisbon, London, and Paris. He also had three notable solo exhibitions during this period: Studio Facchetti, Paris (1956); Martha Jackson Gallery, New York (1957); and the American Cultural Center, Paris (1959). In 1957, Appleby’s work was presented at the 62nd American Exposition of Painters and Sculptors at the Chicago Art Institute, where he was awarded the Norman Wait Harris Bronze Medal and Prize.
Answering the famed artist André Lhote’s call to help save the village of Alba-la-Romaine in the Ardèche, Appleby and his wife - the artist Hope Manchester - purchased a home in the village in 1950, ultimately settling there until their deaths.
