Marco Schmidli
A807 - Large Scale Soft Minimalist Contemporary Color Field Abstract Painting

2018

About the Item

Marco Schmidli’s "A807" is a large captivating abstract painting that merges ethereal textures, atmospheric washes, and gestural marks in a soft yet dynamic composition. The interplay of deep crimson, soft blues, and neutral tones creates a weathered, almost celestial aesthetic, reminiscent of distressed frescoes or aged patina surfaces. This large-scale contemporary artwork exudes a sense of mystery and movement, making it a perfect statement piece for modern interiors seeking organic movements and meditative depth. Swiss born artist Marco Schmidli creates minimalist paintings with a contemporary edge. Placing emphasis on process, he lets the mediums naturally manifest within his artwork. “An important aspect of my artwork is the removal of my own artistic hand. Instead of controlling and demanding the paint move and act a certain way, I let the paint naturally manifest and express its pure form/ true colors/ most natural movement.” Schmidli's work is known for its sensitive surfaces and subtle textures. He has developed specialized techniques for applying and layering color, giving depth to his paintings. The textural nuances and expansive scale of "A807" evoke both intimacy and grandeur, making it a versatile statement piece for collectors seeking to transform their spaces. Its calming palette and layered abstract forms invite contemplation, imbuing any environment with elegance and depth. In "A807", a 96-inch tall by 72-inch wide abstract composition, Schmidli showcases his signature approach of letting the medium naturally manifest, creating an ethereal and evocative piece. Swirling purple tones juxtaposed against a soft, misty palette of blues, whites, and muted pastels give this artwork an atmospheric and meditative quality, reminiscent of color field studies with a contemporary edge. Schmidli studied photography and fine art in Switzerland and Rome. He worked as a photographer and painter in Zurich and then in 1989 he moved to California. In addition to fine art, Schmidli’s work has graced the film and entertainment industries, from fashion spreads to celebrity portraits, music videos, and red-carpet events. His paintings have been featured in iconic publications like Vogue, Flaunt, and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as campaigns for brands such as Nike and Balenciaga. "Indigo Pool" Contemporary Abstract Painting, indigo blue, turquoise, rose red
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
48"x36" abstract composition in indigo blue, turquoise and rose on a white ground. The painting surface incorporates impasto brushwork and poured paint to give an active composition. This painting is signed on reverse by the artist, Debra Drexler. Debra Drexler maintains studios in both New York and Oahu, Hawaii, and her work is informed by her unique bi-coastal experience. In her luminous, large-scale abstract paintings, she brings the transcendent experience of the Hawaiian landscape to a New York audience. Through her New York based studio and curatorial practices, she is also deeply engaged in critical conversation surrounding new abstraction. She states “Abstraction takes us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. While our insistent digital projections can take us away from both our animal and spiritual nature, abstract painting reminds us again of what it means to be human. The corporality of the paint mirrors the flesh of the body and transports us into the timeless.” Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...
