About the Item
Marcus Aitken is a contemporary British artist renowned for his dynamic, gestural abstract paintings, which blend intuitive process with sophisticated technique.
His unique background in graphic and media design gives him what he calls ""a certain edge"" when approaching the canvas, distinguishing him from traditional fine art pathways.
Aitken's raw, intuitive process combines layering, distressing, and blending techniques to create rich, multifaceted surfaces, often incorporating repurposed canvas off-cuts and drawing inspiration from music, urban textures, and his evolving palette of greens, blues, and pinks.
His international recognition includes being named one of Saatchi Art's top 20 emerging artists to watch in 2020, leading to BBC and ITV coverage, while his exhibition history spans solo shows in Madrid, group exhibitions across Europe and the US, participation in Art Basel, and inclusion in the Soho House art collection. With works held in private collections globally and enriched by residencies in Tuscany and Central London, Aitken has established himself as a prominent voice among Britain's new generation of contemporary artists.

Marcus is a contemporary British artist (b.1990) living and working in London. Known for his gestural paintings, Marcus uses a combination of layering, distressing and blending to present a multifaceted surface to his work. His background in design has developed his artistic style creating cutting-edge abstract works. He has shown in exhibitions internationally and has collectors around the globe. His work has been featured by various publications including Schön! Magazine, Condé Nast, Art Plugged, Saatchi Online, Soft Punk Magazine, High Snobiety, Trebuchet, Culture Trip and is part of the Soho House collection. “Marcus’ rigorous design background shines through in his creative process—building up and distressing multiple layers of pigment on canvas, and then applying expressive brushstrokes—ultimately yielding expertly balanced and dramatic compositions.” – Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator & VP Saatchi Art "Aitken impulsively captures raw movements in his work in an exploratory style that dictates his tempo. He is also a drummer in a post-punk band and isn’t one to rest easily, embracing the constant energy that flows through him and feeding it into his art"." - Trebuchet Magazine "Produced on industrial plywood with the artist’s signature, probing style — using brighter tones to underscore more sinister, muted colours — Now + Never stands as a coherent body of work from one of London’s most promising young artists." - Jacob Barnes, Editor of Soft Punk Magazine "I suppose there is an element of performance when I work as the output is very raw, impulsive, and intuitive. These almost 'thrown on' brushstrokes are informed by the different genres of musical tempos I am listening to in the studio at any one time. For me, painting is a very physical process and this is something I hope the viewer is able to engage with when face to face with my work."

Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings.
From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League.
Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...
