Mark Lancaster (British, 1938–2021) was an influential painter, colourist, and stage designer whose work evolved from Pop-inflected beginnings into a sophisticated abstraction grounded in modernist sensibility. After studying at King’s College, Cambridge, Lancaster emerged in the 1960s London art scene before relocating to New York, where he collaborated with Andy Warhol and later became the Resident Lighting Designer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
Renowned for his mastery of colour and compositional harmony, Lancaster’s paintings evoke a quiet lyricism through their geometric structure and chromatic restraint. His works are represented in major collections including Tate, the British Council, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Circles is a quintessential example of his meditative and precise approach to color, form, and spatial rhythm.
