Mark Masyga
Mark Masyga, Quodlibet, large scale abstract oil painting in neutral grey ground

2018

About the Item

This large scale abstract oil painting contains a line based composition over a neutral blue - grey ground, that appears sometimes blue, sometimes violet given the time of day and quality of light. The artist uses beige and light washes to modify the background and has pinks, blues, yellow, with varied color lines and marks to create a visually active painting. Mark Masyga's masterful knowledge and background in color field painting is apparent in the complex color palette and his use of relative and complimentary colors. Mark Masyga received his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and currently lives and works in New York. The recipient of the Edward F. Albee award, Masyga has participated in residencies in Montauk, New York, Skowhegan, Maine, and was featured in the PS 1 Studio Visit Program. Mark Masyga has exhibited extensively in New York and Nationally. Mark Masyga employs drawing techniques of composed and gestural lines of color, which overlap and intersect to create compelling linear abstract compositions. The sometimes coiled, sometimes kinked contours have a structure to them, which is rendered through the artist's intuitive relationship to color and density. There is a controlled depth to the paintings’ visual surface, while the background creates an endless atmosphere in which the lines take on the feel of objects in space. Masyga's masterful knowledge and background in Color Field painting shows a heightened sense and use of color, which he relates to chance encounters on the canvas. These ‘encounters’ become edited and directed until a harmony and accord is achieved through a complex structure created through layering of lines and boundaries of color. Mark Masyga (MFA, School of the Art Institute of Chicago) has held residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Edward F. Albee Foundation. He lives and works in New York City. Masyga’s complex color palette furthers this reference to a seemingly playful manner of composition, when in fact it is well considered, balanced in chroma and hue. Selected forms of relative tint and tone nearly fuse with the neutral background to give a feeling of a great distance between those and the more saturated color shapes that rise to the foreground. Opposing colors and their tangency to each other create a simultaneous contrast that distorts the visual perception of depth. The final compositions present myriad points of contemplation where color and line intersect, with the voids between the visual elements being just as active.

Contemporary abstract painting. The use of Stajan-Ferkul's distinct neutral palette is carried through into her abstract paintings where emphasis is put on simplifying the composition. Textures and patterns play a large role in her minimal yet powerful work. // Andrea Stajan-Ferkul is a Canadian artist whose work conveys a sense of experimentation through the use of paint, fabric collage and abstract mark-making. While not exclusive to fashion, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre. With an emphasis on timelessness, her series of dress paintings shift between realistic representation and interpretive impressions. In contrast, her series of abstract works embrace minimalism, considerate to a restrained palette and composition. Stajan-Ferkul began her career in fashion advertising before shifting her focus to fine art in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely through galleries and art fairs, and hangs in private and public collections across Canada, US and Europe. Layers of paint build up this neutral palette where emphasis is placed on minimal composition. From a distance, the painting explores colour fields and geometric abstraction. Closer up, it's about subtle textures, intuitive mark-making, playful scribbles and remnants of colour. The blending of these two elements invites the viewer to experience a calm while stimulating, visual response.
