About the Item
A202155 is a unique one-of-a-kind small contemporary modern painting by Dutch artist Martin Copier. The painting evokes a sense of three-dimensional perspective although it is essentially just an interplay of hundreds of smaller and larger brush strokes of acrylic paint on canvas. The artist has mastered this technique in such manner that the end result is truly amazing. The patient observer might try to detect a concrete subject in the painting, however in the end it is the absence of a real subject that makes this painting so unique. Is it architecture, is it a construction site, is it an unknown universe, or simply a mind boggling set of intertwined lines...
Martin Copier (1966, The Netherlands) graduated in 2005 from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Breda, The Netherlands and has been working as an autonomous artist since then. His work is layered, and you can feel the calm and patience with which he creates it. He brings movement and depth, playing with light and shadow in a unique way.
In addition to traditional painting techniques, he hand-prints woodcuts using oil paint on linen. This adds movement and texture to his work. Another technique he developed himself involves using homemade tools to apply lines of paint in patterns on the canvas. This creates a structure that gives the impression of weaving with paint. The combination of these techniques—constantly evolving through experimentation—gives his paintings a three-dimensional quality. The paint interacts with light, producing fascinating effects of shadow and depth.
He works in series. This allows him to switch between canvases, let the paintings dry and mature, compare them, make adjustments, and repeat strong elements. Over the course of several months, a series grows until the ultimate result is achieved. After such a period, the entire process begins again—with a new challenge, new canvases, a new plan, and eventually a new series of remarkable artworks.
Martin is an inspired artist, continuously engaged in the act of creation. He embraces the freedom he needs to follow his instincts—exploring space and creating tension within it. His work is both an encouragement and a confirmation to follow your own path and believe in yourself. You are drawn into his work, invited into his universe.
Martin Copiers work is included in many private collections and has been part of group exhibitions at various museums including Jan van der Togt Museum Amstelveen, Museum Gouda, Museum Breda, Museum Gorinchem and Museum De Fundatie Zwolle. His work has also been shown at numerous art fairs such as KunstRAI Amsterdam, Art Karlsruhe and art fairs in London, Milan and Hong Kong.
