About the Item

Martin Rosenthal "Crossed Lines" 1965 Encaustic & Oil paint on paper 19.25"x13" unframed Signed and dated in ink lower right Martin Rosenthal 1899-1974 Artist Martin Rosenthal was born in Woburn, MA. He completed military service in 1925 and then studied at the Art Students League with classmates John Sloan, Robert Henri and Boardman Robinson. As George Luks' associate at the Luks School of Painting - he also taught at Luks' summer home. The Modern Art Exhibition of 1934 was proclaimed by the press: "One of the most comprehensive exhibitions of modern art ever staged outside of a museum." Rosenthal's work was singled out from among exhibited pieces by Chagall, Modigliani, Zorach, and Pissarro. After this, Rosenthal exhibited very little but continued to paint. Sometime in the late 1960’s, the “Future People” series appeared... Rosenthal painted in the dark basement of a small home he shared with his mother in Queens, NY. In time, the works began to grow larger in size and brighter in color - as if to mock the artist’s surroundings. Eventually, he constructed some canvases almost too large to be removed from the basement. Rosenthal never really wanted to sell his “Future People.” Instead he surrounded himself with them like friends. These works were never seen until after Martin’s death in 1974. Exhibitions: 1932 American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, NY "Exhibition of Works George Luks Class" 1934 Young American Moderns, Montross Gallery, Fifth Ave., NY 1938 Montross Gallery 1980 International Fair of Contemporary Art - ART 1980 Washington, DC 2000 Atlanta Folk Fest

San Francisco Abstract Expression A free-spirited wave of creative energy swept through the San Francisco art community after World War II. Challenging accepted modes of painting, Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Abstract Expressionism resulted from a broad collective impulse rather than the inspiration of a small band of New York artists. Documenting the interchanges between the East and West Coasts, she cites areas of mutual influence and shows the impact of San Francisco on the New York School, including artists such as Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt. Moved to New York in 1940 and later joined the Naval Air Corps at the age of 18. He served as an Aviation Cadet in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945. At the end of WWII, Bill returned to Texas. At 21, Bill re-focused his energy and enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Art as an Illustration major. What followed was a whirlwind of success, great friendships and a sense of belonging he had never before experienced. Art was his calling and the art-world could not have been less prepared for the likes of Bill Shields. He took them by storm, first Houston, then San Francisco, followed by New York in the late 60's. For 35 years, Bill produced some of the country's best illustrations: fresh, playful, loose and innovative. His illustrations were coveted by such clients as Bantam Books, Time Life, MacMillan Publishing Co., and were awarded numerous gold medals by the Societies of Illustrators in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and the Houston Artists Guild. Later, following inspirational trips to Mexico and France, Bill shifted his attention to the self-directed world of fine art. After years of sculpting, making assemblages, painting nudes and landscapes, he settled on the exploration of large abstract oil paintings. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Connecticut and New York. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1946, he received his BA in 1949 and his MFA in 1951, both from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. He moved from the Bay Area to the East Coast in 1957 where he began teaching art at SUNY New Paltz, then at Massachusetts College of Art, Brown University, and Harvard University’s Carpenter Center for Visual Arts. He received a Fulbright Fellowship for Painting in 1953 and the John S. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1956. He has been the subject of countless exhibitions, including five solo shows in 2013. Neuman’s work has been on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His work is included in public collections including the Carnegie Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University. He died in June 2015. During the 1950's, Neuman painted in an Abstract Expressionist style, incorporating the stylistic signifiers of the Bay Area School such as broad surface treatments, a full color palette, and atmospheric light. In the 1960's, Neuman's art evolved into geometric abstraction, fusing form and content that often verged on symbolism. He produced various bodies of works such as the Kandinsky-esque cosmos paintings...
