About the Item

Discussion is a unique oil on canvas painting by contemporary artist Mathieu Piffeteau, dimensions are 200 × 200 cm (78.7 × 78.7 in) The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The artist employs a distinctive technique that fragments the very act of painting: he works stroke by stroke, square by square, line by line. Each line shifts subtly in shade, producing the gradations of colour that generate the illusion of light. This repetitive process demands patience and meticulous attention to detail, with each work often requiring weeks or even months to complete. While his approach is deliberate and carefully structured, unexpected outcomes may also emerge through experimentation and chance. Mathieu Piffeteau works with every colour except red; in this piece, he employs shades of blue and white. The result is a striking visual effect of radiant luminosity, an optical illusion achieved through an extended gradation of tones. Piffeteau’s abstract practice explores the diffusion of light and the creation of optical effects by combining simple, universal geometric forms (circles, squares, triangles, etc.) with carefully modulated colour transitions in oil paint. The outcome is a work of compelling vibrancy, immersing the viewer in pure aesthetic contemplation and offering a singular, subjective sensory experience. “For me, the person looking at my paintings is as much an artist as I am: they will participate in the work of art, seeing it with their own perception, experiencing a personal feeling. That’s the point of the artwork.” — Mathieu Piffeteau
