About the Item
This painting was begun in 2019 and completed recently in 2024. The painting consists of numerous layers of stained acrylic paint which the artist poured from containers while the painting was on the ground. The piece travelled to multiple studio settings and was worked on for numerous sessions over the course of roughly 5 years. The visual language consists of geometric and organic poured shapes. Gestural marks with oil paint and spray paint and large fields of overlapping transparent colors. Viewers will notice an unusual aspect of this piece in that the sides of the canvas are painted. The painting was worked on off the stretcher bars and then re-stretched upon completion. The marks on the side of the canvas give the painting a unified whole and the artist took special attention to expand the colors onto the sides to accent the front of the canvas, making this a truly unique piece.
Matt Higgins b. 1987 is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa.
He maintains a regular studio practice in the Fishtown neighborhood focusing on painting in a variety of styles and bodies of work. His work is included in numerous private collections and has been included in a wide range of interior design projects including residential properties, corporations, and hotels.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
