About the Item
This painting is a rhythmic and energetic abstract composition that combines bold color, dynamic form, and the physical layering of materials. The artist employs sweeping shapes and sharp contrasts to create a sense of movement and rhythm across the canvas. Dominated by deep black forms interwoven with vivid blue, bright red, and raw canvas, the piece captures attention with its high contrast and fluid layout. The visual elements seem to twist and flow, suggesting organic or even anatomical shapes.
What makes this work especially dynamic is the use of collaged canvas pieces, which have been integrated into the composition itself, attached with fabric glue. The collaged areas enhance the sense of layered motion, as if the forms are not just painted on but constructed, with some pushing forward and others receding. This technique also emphasizes the physicality of the painting process, drawing attention to the material nature of the artwork.
Collage has always been an important part of Matt's work—the idea of reusing, re-contextualizing, and even resurrecting parts of the painting adds a different layer into the painting. From an economic standpoint the materials are being recycled and reused to avoid waste. The desire to reuse materials forces decisions that typically would not be made otherwise with a brush and the act of cutting and adhering materials to the canvas creates a different work altogether.

Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
