About the Item

Maurice MOREL said l’abbé Morel (1908-1991) Untitled, composition in black, orange, green and plum Mixed media on glossy paper (cut-out magazine page) Signed on reverse 23 x 10 cm Sold in a presentation frame A spiritual painter and fervent advocate of modern art, Maurice Morel was born in Ornans in 1908. At an early age, he discovered a dual vocation: priestly and artistic. After finishing secondary school, he left Besançon and moved to Paris in 1927. He met the artists Georges Rouault and Max Jacob, who were to become his friends and mentors. Max Jacob, for whom Maurice Morel worked, introduced him to the artistic and literary milieu of the interwar period. He went on to collaborate with Jean Bazaine and Alfred Manessier, before embarking on more personal research. Maurice Morel exhibited for the first time in 1933 at an exhibition promoting modern religious art held at the Lucy Krohg gallery (Paris VIIIe). After becoming an abbot in 1934, he became involved in the promotion of sacred art in keeping with the upheavals of modern art, and more broadly in the defense of artists who would become part of the Nouvelle École de Paris, to which he also belonged. He wrote numerous art reviews and spoke at dozens of conferences, the most famous of which was his 1946 lecture on Pablo Picasso at the Sorbonne, which earned him the nickname "curé d'art" (priest of art) in Le Canard Enchaîné. His work came to fruition in the 1950s, when Pope Pius XII commissioned him to consider the creation of a section devoted to modern art within the Vatican Museums. Inaugurated in 1973, it symbolizes the Church's acceptance of non-figurative representations of the Gospel. Abbé Morel favors small formats, using makeshift, recycled materials such as pages cut from magazines and cardboard. He uses a variety of brush techniques (gouache, wax, oil pastels, watercolors) as well as felt-tip pens and ink. He confesses to a "great appetite for color" that began in childhood. In 1968, André Malraux decorated him for the cultural influence of his work.
