A brilliantly executed and richly textured modernist oil composition that distills an architectural scene into a series of angular forms and geometric planes, painted by the established Swedish artist Max Gregor Carlsson (1914-1996), whose works have been exhibited in public collections including the Malmö Museum, Eskilstuna Art Museum, Ystads Museum, Norrköping City Collection, the Landskrona Konsthall.
The composition appears to depict clustered huts rendered in an abstracted, cubist manner – each structure fragmented into simplified blocks of light and dark. The overlapping rooftops and stark verticals guide the eye across a village that feels both familiar and surreal.
The palette is moody and minimal, dominated by deep charcoal, blue, and cream tones with hints of peach. These shades add an atmospheric quietude to the scene, suggesting dusk.
Thick, directional brushstrokes carved into impasto layers give the painting a tactile depth. The artist’s hand is evident in the textured surface, with strokes laid down in rhythmic, almost architectural patterns. The style draws on both Cubist abstraction and the expressive materiality of mid-century modernism, offering a bold yet contemplative visual experience.
