About the Item
In this charming abstract composition by Montreal born Mel Davis, a riot of bright colours in orange, yellow, deep blue, and mauve pop against the background of a red tablecloth. Davis was influenced by the colourful and fluid work of French masters like Matisse, but her adventurous use of colour, form and pattern is uniquely her own.
“My paintings investigate iconic themes in art such as landscape, the portrait, the interior. I am interested in how we as makers and viewers can find endless modes of description and emotional connection in these classical representations.” Mel Davis
She graduated from Concordia University with a BFA in 1998. A short study trip at the Slade School of Art in London was followed by a move to California where she acquired her MFA at the San Francisco Institute of Art. Davis still lives in the Bay area. Her work has been shown in both solo and group shows in Canada and the U.S.

To great effect, Mel Davis uses colour, shape and patterns to convey emotion in this abstract composition. The palette is dramatic—rich tones of blues, green, orange and burgundy. “My paintings investigate iconic themes in art such as landscape, the portrait, the interior. - Zen Garden - bright, floral, impasto, abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvasBy Adam CohenLocated in Bloomfield, ONA floral motif in shades of pink, blue, green and lemon is used in an all over pattern by artist Adam Cohen in this delightfully bright painting. Cohen intersects the language of Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. The artist is known for his applications of thick impasto, applied in layers that he cuts through and moves while the pigments are wet. Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. He was one of the first artists to use Photoshop, which helped launch his career as an illustrator. After many successful years as an illustrator he returned to his first love...Category

- Castilleja cruenta standlBy Penelope GottliebLocated in Palm Desert, CAA painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Castilleja cruenta standl" is a contemporary painting, ink, acrylic and oil on canvas panel in a variety of bright, bold colors by American artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...Category

- Abstract Flowers Oil Painting Study for AmaryllisBy Nobu FukuiLocated in Surfside, FLThis piece is done in a sort of sgraffito technique with the flowers sort of etched in the paint.
