About the Item

The series "CSW" explores the marriage of chance-derived gestures with exacting grid geometry. Built upon a multilayered convergence of airbrush painting and hard-edge techniques on wood, this ethereal series solicits our visual perception by suggesting optical motifs emerging out obscuration and shimmering planes. The piece comes ready to hang and is lightly with clean natural wood edges. keywords; Repetition, Vegetal, Op Art, Design, Multilayered, Dynamic Composition, Floral, Serial Formalism, Gold Shimmer, Gold, Grid, contemporary, white, green, blue About the artist: In Melisa’s optical and pulsating compositions, the natural world acts as blue-print while she explores the notion of the sublime through blur and precision. The artist develops an aesthetic of duality by hybridizing divergent approaches to art. Her studio practice is labor-intensive; various instruments and electric tools are used out-of-context to inject unpredictability in the painting gesture. Melisa has assimilated to her visual language an eclectic multilayering process combining hand-made stencilling, airbrushing, pyrography and staining on wood. Mechanical-like execution and arbitrariness converge to create what she calls "systèmes faillibles" whereby painstakingly applied layers are potentially defaced by one single final intervention. A resulting subterranean tension is generated that jeopardizes the ethereal aspect of her imagery populated by spectral motifs that simultaneously emerge and recede through an obscuring lattice. Melisa Taylor's vibrant geometric abstractions evoke simulacra of human-scale screens that attempt to capture the vertiginous amount of incoming data and distractions contemporary humans experience on a daily basis in this era of “hyper-connectivity”, all the while attempting to temper the “noise” to induce a contemplative experience. Melisa lives and works out of her home studio in Quebec City.

Yellow Grid Play - orange, grey, green, geometric abstract, acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Precise squares in orange, rust red, green, grey, maroon and white dance, overlap and swirl on a washed canary yellow ground in this intimate canvas by Milly Ristvedt. Color and the grid are the focus of Ristvedt's paintings that through one's lens of experience will reveal a narrative. "Painting is my freedom 'to be' in the world, to transform what I think and feel about life, to express the essence of things that matter. Colour is the magical sensation and substance, the 'philosopher's stone,' that for me represents hope in a time of great challenge for us all." Milly Ristvedt Early in her career in Toronto in the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections including the Art Gallery...
