About the Item

Michael Callas "Trousdale Poolside (Winter)" Spray Paint and Stencil on Panel 72 x 43.5 in. Growing up in Southern California in Orange County, the combination of the area’s natural beauty with its planned communities and highly curated environments were a heavy influence on his artistic process. Rooted in Pop art, street art, graphic design, drafting, and his life in Southern California, Michael Callas’ paintings are done entirely with spray paint and stencils. Integrating figure and language, Callas combines text, character archetypes, and bold color within each composition. Maintaining a comic aesthetic, his compositions are intricately produced through a rigorous process of drafting, mapping, and hand-cutting precise templates. Then transposed onto canvas with aerosol paints, Callas creates a surface that is uniform and rich in color. “My goal is to create a piece of art that looks like the hand was never there. I love clean chaos free surfaces. I want my work to look print like. For that reason, it requires an extremely rigid and specific process" says Callas.
