Dynamic & Colorful Mid-Century Painting by French Artist Michel Patrix

Ca. 1950

About the Item

A dynamic & colorful Mid-Century painting (ca. 1950) by French Artist Michel Patrix, in purples, yellow and reds. The painting is titled "Coings au Plateau Noir" or (Quinces on a black platter). Image size: 25 1/2" x 32". Framed size: 26 1/4" x 32 1/4". Biography source: Wikipedia Michel Patrix, whose father was an engineer, inventor and manufacturer of machine tools for carpentry, spoke of music-loving parents, keen on art "except when it came to my career" 1 . His family having settled in Castelsarrazin , Michel completed his secondary studies at the Collège des Doctrinaires in Brive-la-Gaillarde , where he received encouragement from his drawing teacher who accompanied him to paint watercolours from life: "he does not forget," confirms Serge Lucas, "this drawing teacher who, tired of his singing, as a punishment, took him one Thursday to do a watercolour. He was thirteen, it was love at first sight" 2 . At the same time, he enjoyed visiting the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in Moissac , the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi , the Augustins Museum in Toulouse , and the Ingres Museum in Montauban , where he copied the drawings of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres 1 . After obtaining his baccalaureate in philosophy (a subject he would also have liked to pursue), he affirmed his vocation as an artist by breaking with his parents for this purpose, and, settling in Bordeaux 3 , successively worked, until his mobilization from February 1937 (Air Force at La Réole ) to July 1940, as a docker, factory laborer, representative, site manager, "and even bureaucrat" 1 . The Ladder Group Paris, the Academy of the Grande-Chaumière . He arrived in Paris in 1941 and frequented the studio of André Lhote , then that of Othon Friesz when he joined the Groupe de l'échelle founded in 1942, so called for the habit its members had of climbing a ladder to observe the rooftops of Paris. He brought together with him, in a small studio made available to them on the second floor of the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière , the painters Geneviève Asse , Jacques Busse , Jean-Marie Calmettes, Ernest-René Collot , Jean Cortot , Daniel Dalmbert and Christiane Laran, as well as the sculptor Jacques Dufresne 4 . If we observe the presence of the members of the group at the Salon des moins de trente ans in November 1943 - Pierre du Colombier noted "Michel Patrix, a fine colorist who dared to tackle a human subject" 5 -, Éric Mercier does not fail to "underline the importance of the Groupe de l'échelle between 1945 and 1950: it constituted one of the rare and perhaps the only figurative group spontaneously formed outside of any external interference, such as that of dealers or critics. It sketched out the first figurative aesthetic resulting from both the great elders of the beginning of the century and the war years" 6 . Paris, rue Neuve-Popincourt side no . 7 Paris, La Coupole brewery After living at 59, avenue de Saxe , then with his friend Jean-Marie Calmettes at 18, boulevard Edgar-Quinet in 1943, at 7, rue du Pot-de-Fer in 1945, Michel Patrix moved to 7, rue Neuve-Popincourt in 1947. In 1951, each of the artists of the Groupe de l'échelle received a commission, as part of the celebration of the bimillennium of Paris, for a large composition intended to decorate the interior frieze of the brasserie La Coupole (the works would remain in place until the mid-1960s) 4 . Michel Patrix was selected for the Prix de la Critique in the same year 1951 7 then, in 1952 (the year he married Annie Aubrun), the General Directorate of Arts and Letters awarded him a travel grant for a stay in Ouessant . Without breaking the bonds of friendship, the last exhibition of the Groupe de l'échelle was held in Le Havre in 1953: "each then followed his own path and developed his own style" 4 , or for Michel Patrix "this robust drawing, with colours arranged in skillfully constructed areas, illustrating his certain sense of the monumental" 8 .
