Michele Kishita
Open Water, Trade Winds: abstract Japanese inspired landscape w/ ocean, in blue

2021

About the Item

Michele Kishita's recent body of abstract landscape paintings on wood panel amplify the expanse of space in the sky, placing the viewer in a floating position before the infinite, where the horizontal lines act more as nadir than horizon. Stylistically, Kishita’s work is deeply influenced by the strong lines and compressed space of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly the landscapes and natural world imagery of Hiroshige and Hokusai. The past two years have stretched many of us beyond out limits; Kishita’s paintings are her intuitive response to these current circumstances, asking viewers to look beyond the challenges and reflect on the beauty that is both known and unknown. Kishita received her MFA and BFA degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She has held artist residencies in Iceland, Russia, and New Mexico, and her work has been featured in exhibitions across the US, in Russia, and in the United Arab Emirates. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of Toyota, Kaiser Permanente, Park Towne Place, Temple University, Drexel University, Texas Tech University, the University of the Arts. Kishita maintains a studio in Philadelphia, PA. This painting is signed, dated, and titled on the back. It is complete with all installation hardware and ready to hang. No need for additional framing.

    By Kyoung Mi Lee
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, quiet and deeply contemplative piece from a Korean artist based in America, Kyoung Mi Lee (Lee Kyoungmi) The oil painting is on a specially constructed 3D birch wood panel to create a sensory visual effect, almost like looking through the looking glass. The centerpiece of the painting depicts a beautiful little park in Germany, near her home in Germany where Kyoung Mi lived for a spell. Due to work, Kyoung Mi has lived in various countries and whilst she loved her new homes, there is a sense of displacement and not belonging. This perhaps reflects the truth for many of us who travel and live in different places, moving away from home for work, love or simply to seek a new or different life. As such, the Greek torso...
