About the Item

Inspired by nature’s palette and form, Milly Ristvedt continued her exploration of colour. In this lyrical abstract piece, colour continues to dominate as a rich green covers the canvas. Expressive swaths of colour also appear—deep blues, a bright turquoise and yellow. Fine gestural lines of red and bright green add movement and visual interest throughout the work. "Colours were altered by adding different amounts of water, medium or gel, according to how I imagined using them as ideas fell into place during the period of testing on pieces of canvas. Once this ‘ammunition’ was lined up, I was ready to start painting." Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Her work has been included in many publications. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004 and honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She has won seven Canada Council awards and two Ontario Arts Council awards and had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows.

A Country Like You (Le Pays Qui te Ressemble) - abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This lyrical, colourful abstract painting is by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak- one in a series created in collaboration with an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi, a lover of literature and linguistics. In this dynamic composition, expressive, gestural lines and swaths of colour—yellow, green, turquoise, white, melon and brown flow across the canvas. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful bronze figurative sculptures. This painting was inspired by a poem entitled ‘L’invitation au voyage” written by C. Baudelaire, a famous French poet. ‘Au pays qui te ressemble’ means ‘the country that resembles you’. “The collaboration, which has its beginnings in the picturesque setting of Lake Como, continues, more productive than ever, on an island in the heart of the Mediterranean animated by the tide, the motion of the waves, the active volcano Etna and tales of local mythology.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
