About the Item

Twelve rectangular panels, each painted alternately in solid colors or solid with tinted vertical stripes, are installed in a precise grid: two high and six across. The artist began this work in 2003 painting two then and coming back to the panels in 2013 when verticals were added to create "the challenge of potential directions." The artist has painted the panels in pairs spanning over 11 feet using 18 shades of orange, gold, yellow, turquoise, gray and indigo. The title of the work doubles the number of colours used deliberately veering from an implied order created out of chance over time. This striking work is a poetic and intellectual narrative of movement and time through the curated application of colour. Milly Ristvedt (b. 1942, Kimberley, BC) RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. At 24, her work was included in the Centennial Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario and featured at the National Gallery of Canada. She was chosen for prestigious exhibitions in Winnipeg, Paris and Lausanne. By 1969, Ristvedt was sharing a studio with Jack Bush and showing with the Carmen Lamanna Gallery. Over her long career, Ristvedt has had over 50 solo exhibitions. Her abstract, acrylic canvases are held in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Harvard University. Barry Lord observed in Art in America (1969) that Ristvedt’s paintings were “…more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.” This painting is accompanied by a book recently published on her work, Colour and Meaning: An Incomplete Palette.

Proposition (Set of Four) - large, colourful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Milly Ristvedt is making a bold proposition in this dramatic series of four large paintings designed to be displayed together. Each of the four canvases offers a stunning visual dialogue in blocks of colour—reds, purples, orange, greens, blues, black and white for contrast. Ristvedt is known as a master colourist who uses colour to express thought and emotion. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “They are meant to be ‘read’ together in the same viewing space. The conversations between them are intense.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...

Extension - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this dynamic new work by Milly Ritsvedt, bold vertical bands of pure colour run the length of the painting. As always, Ristvedt’s choice of colours in this hard-edged piece is masterful—turquoise, deep pink, blue and bright yellow. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “The paintings of the past two or three years explore questions of form, colour and process that arise out of earlier works.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. Fire (Paradise Paintings) - large, geometric, abstract, group series, acrylic
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
A dark, forest green square is flanked by smaller squares of indigo, red and pale yellow on a hot ground of brushed red, orange and yellow in this bold acrylic on canvas. Aptly titled "Fire" this powerful image is part of the Paradise group of paintings. The eight canvases in this group are titled after the Paradise Papers, reflecting narratives of wealth, the ways in which it is made and inequality. Milly Ristvedt (b. 1942, Kimberley, BC) RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art.
