About the Item

Mitsumasa Kadota’s "Secret" (2020) is a mesmerizing exploration of movement, texture, and the ephemeral nature of perception. Created with acrylic and carborundum on cotton, this painting invites viewers into a dynamic interplay of color and form, where fluid gestures evoke a sense of energy suspended in time. Kadota’s signature technique is evident in "Secret", where layers of thick, sweeping strokes create an illusion of movement, as if the colors themselves are shifting and flowing across the canvas. The contrast between vibrant greens, deep purples, bright whites, and subtle golden tones adds depth, while the incorporation of carborundum enhances the surface texture, giving the painting a multi-dimensional quality. This combination of controlled composition and organic motion is characteristic of Kadota’s work, where each piece becomes an evolving dialogue between color, material, and light. The painting’s title, "Secret", further enhances its intrigue—suggesting hidden depths, unseen layers, and meanings that reveal themselves gradually. Kadota’s works have been exhibited internationally, including at Lincoln Center in New York and the Sezon Museum of Modern Art in Japan. His innovative use of materials and his unique approach to abstraction have established him as a significant contemporary artist whose works continually engage collectors and institutions. "Secret" was created in 2020, a year that marked a period of introspection and transformation for many. This work encapsulates that spirit, offering a visual representation of fluidity and resilience. Its textured surface and bold composition make it a remarkable addition to any collection, bringing both presence and movement to a space. In person, "Secret" has a striking sense of motion—thick, flowing brushstrokes seem to stretch across the canvas, creating an effect reminiscent of cascading silk or shifting natural landscapes. The play of color is dynamic, with rich greens and purples contrasting against luminous whites and golden yellows, creating a visual rhythm that changes depending on the lighting and viewing angle. The carborundum mixed into the paint gives the surface an intricate textural quality that is not fully captured in photographs. This results in an artwork that shifts in appearance, offering new perspectives depending on how and where it is viewed. The scale (194 × 130.5 cm) further enhances its impact, allowing the viewer to become immersed in its layered complexity. Kadota’s "Secret" is a compelling work that bridges abstraction and emotional depth. With its fluid brushstrokes, rich texture, and interplay of colors, it offers a piece that continually transforms in response to its environment. A striking choice for collectors, this painting holds a presence that is both powerful and poetic, revealing new details and interpretations over time.

Secret Garden
By Novi Lim

Artist commentary: I like to transport my mind to a calming place, inspired by memories, and complex organic elements found in nature. Playing with colors and movement, creating new compositions -- my best work comes when there is freedom to create without any strict plan. With intuition and spontaneity taking over, the result is often a surprise. To me, everything flows, and there is always a sense of balance and harmony that can emerge out of disorder. I love the ambiguous and mysterious nature of abstraction. Through self-discovery and experimentation, I am allowing dynamic energy that manifests through the joy of creating. The result is loose interpretations of anything that exists between the mind and reality, therefore each painting is unique and sometimes inexplicable. About the Artist: Ethereal and calming, Novi Lim's painting transports its audience to a land that is both dreamlike yet familiar. Lim Finds inspiration in the natural world, and seeks to capture their essence through an organic and sensory creative process. In the artist's own words: "Often, imagining a mythical flower that blooms and lit up in the nighttime or seeing something as simple as the calming gradient of the colorful sky at sundown, or the surface of water that glimmers which makes me wonder about the mystery of the deepest oceans -- piqued my creative process and subliminal stimuli." Guided by instinctive feeling, Lim lets the movements of her paintbrush flow as she experiments with atmospheric lighting, transparency, and color. The result is an ambiguous landscape that treads between the subconscious and waking world.
