About the Item
This contemporary abstract expressionist fauvist landscape depicting Provence, titled "Clouds over cypress", in the south of France, was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing series dedicated to nature—and above all to Provence, a place where she continually finds her inspiration.
For the artist, Provence is more than a landscape—it is a feeling, a memory of summer and blazing sunlight, of golden yellows shimmering in the heat. “This region always holds a special place in my heart,” she confides, “for me it is inseparable from warmth, radiance, and the painters I so deeply admire—Matisse, Van Gogh, Cézanne—who once walked these same hills and transformed them into color.”
Her canvas reflects this legacy while speaking with her own voice. Swirling, animated brushstrokes sweep across the surface, charged with reds, yellows, and blues. “These vivid colors are my instruments to express the mood of the painting,” she explains, “while my brushstrokes embody its very character.” In this piece, the blues bear a particular resonance—an homage to the bold palette of Fauvism, and in particular to Henri Matisse, whose fearless use of color she reinterprets in her own language.
At the heart of her process lies a desire to transmit not just an image, but a sensation. “I want this painting to carry the beauty and the energy of Provence,” she shares, “to awaken an emotional response through color and form.” Thus, her landscapes are not academic studies of nature, but poetic visions—simultaneously familiar and fantastical, rooted in place yet lifted into a realm of emotion and imagination.
This vibrant artwork radiates with that duality: two towering trees anchor the composition, while the sky dances in bold blue-green sweeps and the ground shimmers like a mosaic of red, yellow, and indigo. Expressionist energy and fauvist color converge here to suggest not a literal scene, but the living spirit of Provence—wild, radiant, and eternal.
Thus painting is executed with acrylic paints on a heavyweight professional acid free paper which has been vanished fir protection.
The artwork (42 x 29.7 cm / 16.5 x 11.7 inches) is sold unframed, allowing you to choose a frame that best suits your space and personal style.
For inspiration, interior photos with framing suggestions are available.
Your painting will be carefully packaged and shipped directly from France, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring the integrity and provenance of your unique piece.
About the Artist:
Natalya Mougenot, born in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, in 1981, has lived in Lyon, France, since 2003. Raised in a multicultural environment during the Soviet era, her diverse background deeply influences her artistic identity. What began as a therapeutic practice has grown into a rich exploration of themes such as modern femininity, resilience, and personal empowerment. Her emotionally resonant works—blending abstraction, nature, and floral elements—have found homes in private collections across the globe.
Natalya Mougenot id a french artist living in France for more than 20 years. She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes. She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country. She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now. In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult. As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult. Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference. She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details. Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach. Natalya manipulates different mediums without a preconceived plan since she is guided by what she wants to express at the moment by embracing the quality of my materials. She does not deny that her artworks reflect her intuitive approach and her love for vibrant colors which represent her who she is. Natalya says she is never able to create the same piece more than once. Sometimes she paints from photos or images. Sometimes she paints from memory. She tells to herself : "Just be yourself when you create ".

About the artist.
Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock.
He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations.
Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him.
Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes.
He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. A description and critical analysis of his work in included in the book by Henry Rankin Poore...
