About the Item
These new paintings and works on paper are the outgrowth of experimentation that seeks to bring the work to a newer outpost of Baker’s search for an honest self-revelation. The new small paintings are predicated by a fascination with caves, both as a viewer from inside them and outside them. Fascinated by the cave paintings of Joseph Wright of Derby, whose works “were a significant record of the struggle of science against religious values in the period known as the Age of Enlightenment.” It seems appropriate once again to find solace in the scientific method, and her work still has significant interest in numbers and ratios found in objects and space.
Nancy Baker earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the US, including ODETTA in Brooklyn, NY; Front Room Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Mark Moore Gallery, CA; Winkleman Gallery, NYC; Schema Projects, Brooklyn, NY; Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Greenhill Center, Greensboro, NC; Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; NC Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; 1708 Gallery, Richmond VA; Heriard Cimino Gallery in NOLA; and Lump Gallery, Raleigh, NC.
She has received numerous awards, including two North Carolina Artists Fellowships, a Tennessee Individual Artist Fellowship, and an NEA Southern Arts Fellowship.
She was awarded a commission with MTA Arts and Design for two train stations in Brooklyn, which was fabricated in stainless steel.
Last year she was commissioned to create a new work for Karen Brooks Hopkins, the Director of Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Angie Drakopoulos, Element1, 2 2018, Acrylic On Print, 11 x 14 Framed
By Angie Drakopoulos
Located in Darien, CT
Using symmetry as a basis, Drakopoulos derives structure by combining elements from the natural world and science. Modifying these elements digitally, Drakopoulos distills into a pattern or shape, and then layers them with a different structure and repeats the process of layering paint in resin. She tries to find the most subtle and interesting way to connect the different layers that will reveal an underlying structure or system.
Slowly as the work evolves, these inner-connections and details begin to form and define the energy and invisible forces that govern the movement of matter, from the microcosmic level of molecules and light particles, to the macrocosmic of planets and galaxies. Drakopoulos views the cosmos as a primordial, all encompassing field within which the illusion of matter is created and dissolved. In this field, particles come together to create complex structures and matter evolves into its maximum state of order. This moment is temporary, a state of transition. The form will subsequently dissolve and the process will begin again. The central images that appear in her work describe this moment of emergence. They are not a representation of actual cosmic phenomena but rather an invented image of an inner mindscape. When attention is directed to the infinite vast field, which contains all of existence in potential, the holographic matrix of the universe is revealed, of which our consciousness is an interwoven part.
Angie Drakopoulos is an artist who lives and works in New York City.
Her work has been exhibited in various galleries including: ODETTA, McKenzie Fine Art, Southampton Art Center, Paris Koh Fine Arts, Smack Mellon, New York Hall of Science, Feature, G-module, Holland Tunnel...
