Nicholas Evans
"Congratulatory" (Abstract, Figurative, Black & White, Portrait, Antique Wood)

2020

About the Item

CONGRATULATORY 2020 Paris, France Subtle, black & white, figurative portrait in chalk on antique wood. Wood itself has a lot of character, with a beautiful, grey patina. Evidence of wormwood on the left side of the piece leaves some small holes. Edges are very raw and rough to the touch, with a natural indentation of the wood on the right side. D-hooks on back for hanging. Evans Deventer signature stamp features painting name, location of where work was done and year. -- Nicholas Evans (b. 1982) is an American, Paris-based artist, designer and creative director. Painting is a cornerstone of Evans’ artistic expression, which is largely inspired by personal events, religious symbolism, and historical allegories. In addition to traditional oil and acrylics, Evans uses materials such as plasters, wax, salt and found objects in his works, presenting a way to seek new meaning in elements that have collapsed or eroded over time. Threads of poetry convey the fragmented logic of suffering, lost love and redemption that push him to create. After early success in New York’s fashion and creative industry, followed by nearly losing his life to addiction, a liver transplant gave way to new perspective and allowed Evans to reinvent himself. Inspired to revisit the rudiments of expression through his first love of painting, Nicholas began working under the moniker of Evans Deventer to present his art. Through Evans Deventer, he is continuously intrigued by the ‘decayed decadence’ of long-held traditions and the looming past, and how to represent them visually. Evans Deventer is also represented as a brick and mortar space, which he designed in 2015, featuring furniture, jewelry and objects, in addition to artwork.

  • "Set Us In Stone I" (abstract, blue, Parisian, graphic, bust on natural canvas)
    By Nicholas Evans
    Located in Paris, IDF
SET US IN STONE I 2022 Paris, France Originally created as part of Nicholas' solo exhibition "This, and Thereafter (Plumes)," December 10, 2022 - January 7, 2023. The theme illustrated the enigmatic uncertainty around what might happen after life. A range of paintings were presented – vibrant and ethereal – touching on different aspects of this notion. Each painting had a different point of view, oftentimes focusing around the inevitability of what is to come, and if and how it influences the present. This particular piece centers around personal legacy, how you will be remembered, and how your life vanishes into an abstraction as time goes by. This notion is visualized with a bust set in stone. The technique Evans used was a mixing of water-based ink with a hint of blue, that he knew would react when overlaid with white acrylic, pulling out a lighter hue of the blue ink. The white silhouette of a portrait set in stone creates a ghostly continuation of the underlaid pattern. Option to create a pair alongside "Set Us In Stone II" (as pictured). Price and size are per painting. Evans Deventer...
