In 1981 he graduated in Painting at the National Academy of Arts. Since the same year he has been a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and has started to participate in youth competitions, zonal competitions and general art exhibitions. He started his career as a painter doing figurative paintings. He then focused in color which took over, his pieces are marked with influences of abstract art, depicting landscapes that he creates while playing with the colors and with aerial and linear perspectives, all in one harmonious expression. Nikolay has successfully sold paintings on Sotheby's auctions
