About the Item
Orazio De Gennaro's "Terra Bruciata (Scorched Earth) #57" is an 11 x 13 inch abstract painting on paper mounted on a board. The artist works with natural earth, charcoal, straw, pigments, lime paint, shellac, and fire on 400 lb watercolor paper. There is a primal and tridimensional feeling to it, as the impasto is thick and irregular.
Earth colors are in the lower part, with blue and purple hues above. The colors, fading in and out, create a very atmospheric impression.
Italian born - from the southern region of Campania, home to the ancient Roman sites of Pompei and Ercolano - De Gennaro states " My work references the land of my ancestors. Over the years, the elements of that land - the light, texture, shadows, color and the actual materials themselves - earth pigments, lime, marble dust - have formed the essence of an “inner landscape” and have become a reference point for my work. I was trained as a sculptor and the “feel” of the material is central to my work. The use of and commitment to unconventional handmade tactile materials is essential for me. I use an earth palette which includes handmade lime paint, pigments, graphite, handmade oil pastel, sand, dirt, and straw. The creation of these materials in the studio is an essential component of my process. I build up the surface, adding layers,
sometimes scrape away, and often take a torch to what remains. This physical engagement establishes an intimate relationship with these active substances leading to a sense of immediacy, depth, and freshness."

A striking mid-century textural color-field abstract in a bold color palette of royal blue-purple by San Francisco artist Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). This highly textured mixed media piece, c.1960's, uses a monochromatic palette that is divided into two areas of varying textural depths. The lower part of the canvas verges on sculptural, as the textured surface becomes almost three-dimensional and haunting forms emerge from the abstract purple-blue plane.

Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle.
