About the Item
Description & Uniqueness
“Oju Ala,” which translates to Dream in Yoruba, is a striking original from Bukola Orioye’s 2025 series Oju Lari… But Beneath the Surface. This 25-piece body of work explores human identity and perception—what is visible on the surface versus the deeper truths that lie beneath. Orioye’s signature style of bold silhouettes and translucent overlays creates a sense of fluidity and motion, evoking the blurred, layered experience of dreams.
What sets this work apart is its ability to merge cultural memory and spirituality with contemporary aesthetics. The central figure, rendered in luminous layers of blue, pink, and white, appears to float or tumble through an infinite space. Fiery red accents—particularly in the hair—add emotional intensity, symbolizing passion, energy, and the chaotic freedom of the subconscious. The interplay of concealment and revelation resonates with Yoruba philosophies while opening itself to universal interpretations of the dream state.
Value & Why It’s Worth the Price
“Oju Ala” is both visually captivating and conceptually profound. It bridges tradition with modernity, offering a meditation on the subconscious through an African lens while engaging global themes of identity and introspection. As part of a limited series of 25 works, it represents not only aesthetic value but also rarity and cultural depth. Collectors of contemporary African art will find it a strong investment—positioned within a growing market for innovative West African voices.
Condition
The work is in pristine condition, created in 2025 using professional-grade acrylics on stretched canvas. Colors are vivid and unfaded, with no cracks, warping, or surface damage. The artist’s signature and date appear discreetly, ensuring authenticity.
Background & History

Trained under mentor Tope Fatumbi in 2019, Orioye has steadily developed a practice that resonates across themes of identity, ancestry, and the unseen dimensions of life.
