Otto Rogers
Composition of Light - contemporary, cubist, abstract, acrylic on canvas

2012

About the Item

This contemporary abstract mixed media piece is by Otto Rogers. Otto Rogers is considered one of the finest contemporary artists in Canada. A masterful painter and sculptor, Rogers developed his own signature style that echoed the bold cubist-constructivist form of work he admired--Pablo Picasso, Julio González and David Smith. This mixed media piece is rendered in a rich tapestry of earthy colours—panels of pale gray, putty and melon enlivened by gestural brushstrokes and markings in soft yellow, white, and turquoise. Black is used as an effective contrast in bold vertical lines that frame the interior of the canvas. The overall effect is luminous. “I came to the conclusion that obviously the most important element was light…Without light, you have nothing…no colour, no texture, no definition, no form.” Otto Rogers “He stands apart from much of Canadian abstract art, in which colourists working with a high-keyed palette so often held the lion’s share of critical attention. This preoccupation with shifts in values reflects Rogers’s love of light. It is tempting to credit that love merely to the vast, sunlit expanse of the prairies he was raised on. But light has a special meaning for him beyond that. He associates it with knowledge and wisdom, in part because of his Baha’i faith.” Ken Carpenter, Professor of Art History, York University Otto Rogers (1935-2019) was born in Saskatchewan and acquired his MA in Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin. He later taught art at the University of Saskatchewan for 30 years. His work is included in more than 30 public collections across Canada, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, and the National Gallery of Canada. Roger’s work is also in the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the National Gallery of Iceland, as well as numerous private and corporate collections. Rogers also helped sustain the Emma Lake Workshops, which provided a meeting place for many of North America's most respected visual artists and critics, including Clement Greenberg, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitiski, Kenneth Noland, Jack Shadbolt, and Helen Frankenthaler. In 2007, a book of his work, Otto Donald Rogers, including a foreword by British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, was published.

What You See - large, soft, blue, pink, gestural abstract, acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
A flurry of washed passages in a sky blue and rose pink mixed with passages of brilliant yellow, black, turquoise and cherise with curved strands of fixed pastel. These fine lines in bright green, electric blue, pink, cherise and black create spatial tension and depth within the large picture plane. This painting from 1980 is an early example of Ristvedt's ability to create a poetic narrative of space, light, texture and movement through color. Milly Ristvedt (b. 1942, Kimberley, BC) RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. At 24, her work was included in the Centennial Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario...

Time and Motion - rich, dark, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Milly Ristvedt continues her exciting exploration of colour and form in this stunning new work. Hard-edged geometric shapes—rectangles and squares almost appear to be dancing around the canvas. The colour palette is bright—yellows, red, blues, purples which play off the darker, fluid burgundy/black backdrop. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “Colour has been central to my explorations in painting from the beginning.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...
