About the Item

The vibrant colours—burnt orange, turquoise, black-a touch of green and the dynamic form of this inspired composition is quintessentially Otto Rogers. The modernist artist was masterful in his use of acrylic paints and his work reflected the natural beauty that surrounded his country studio. Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized by the NY art critic, Clement Greenberg as a ‘big attack’ painter early in his career and stated that his artwork showed a ‘fullness of inspiration.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’ “Nature is God's art but art is a reflection of man’s nature.” Otto Rogers He acquired his MA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin and later taught art at the University of Saskatchewan for 29 years. Rogers also participated in the Emma Lake Workshops in BC which attracted some of North America’s finest artists. His work is held in private and more than 30 public collections including: the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Seashore Light - bold, earthy, modernist, abstract, acrylic & graphite on paper
By Otto Rogers
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Using his characteristic rich earthy palette, Otto Rogers has captured the subtle variations in light as it changes along a seashore. This piece has soft grays, rich brown, and black colours highlighted by a flash of royal blue and burnt orange. As one of Canada’s preeminent modernist artists, Rogers found inspiration in both his deep faith as a Baha’i and the beauty of nature so often reflected in his stunning work. This is acrylic and graphite on paper. “The purpose of art is to lift the human spirit.” Otto Rogers He acquired his MA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin and later taught at the University of Saskatchewan for almost 30 years. He also participated in the Emma Lake Workshops in BC which attracted some of North America’s finest artists. Rogers’ work is held in more than 30 public collections including: the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston...

Listening to Scarlatti - bold, layered, abstract shapes, collage on paper
By Francine Simonin
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Vertical composition on paper with a canary yellow acrylic ground over which bristle brushed lines are cross hatched in black. Layered over these central marks is a central collaged strip of paper highlighted in ultra marine blue and grey topped by a tache of white paint. This is balanced by a horizontal strip in white and grey at the foot of the composition held down by another white swipe of white acrylic. A small horizontal collaged rectangle at the upper left keeps the eye moving upwards in the picture plane. This work is unframed. Please ask us about framing options. Titled "listening to Scarlatti", or en ecoutant Scarlatti in French, the piece may certainly be a response to the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, an Italian composer and contemporary of Bach and Handel. Scarlatti spent much of his life at the service of the Portugese and Spanish royalty...
