Living in temples and the countryside with craftsman communities in Japan for over a decade, Majio was deeply influenced aesthetically and by the content of Japanese culture. Her craft apprenticeships and Zen practice in Kyoto was steeped in traditional practices where spirit was not separate from matter. This animistic base is seen throughout her work. From Majio’s visual journal: Hill Town is marked and scratched into a painted-rust surface with attached cardboard and netting. The buttery gold in contrast helps the image emerge from the materials as place. Paradoxically the place is not material but rather an environment frequented in my dreams.
