Pat Lipsky Bird Sings on 11th Street, 1969 Stamped "Pat Lipsky" by the artist on the overlap Acrylic on canvas 80 x 117 inches Provenance Dorothy Blau Gallery, Miami Private Collection, Miami (Art critic for the Miami Herald, 1970s) Private Collection, Washington, D.C. Fritz Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida Private Collection, Miami Exhibited Palm Bach, Florida, Fritz Gallery : Modern and Contemporary, 2018 Raised by a painter mother and an engineer father, Lipsky had her first one-woman show at the André Emmerich Gallery in New York City. Her work at the time was strongly in the spirit of Lyrical Abstraction. By the later seventies and eighties, Lipsky had expanded her palette to include bolder colors and geometric forms. She had also begun to explore, as the critic Katherine Crum later wrote, a pictorial vocabulary in direct challenge to her roots in lyrical abstraction. Born in New York, Lipsky was surrounded with modern art since childhood. Growing up in Manhattan Beach, she continued her education as a teenager by attending art classes at the Brooklyn Museum as well as many visits to the city’s major museums. During this time she became familiar with the works of painters Paul Klee, Piet Mondrian, and Robert Delaunay, as she simultaneously observed developments in New York abstract expressionism and minimalism. By her twenties, she had connected with color field painting, particularly those painted directly onto raw canvas. On weekend trips to Manhattan during her time at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, seeing the paintings of Mark Rothko made her realize that few colors could be the subject of a painting. Despite her earlier representational work, Lipsky committed her focus entirely to abstraction after entering her graduate studies as an artist at Hunter College, where she found a mentor in Tony Smith. Her very first solo gallery exhibition, presented in 1970 at André Emmerich Gallery, was well received, including in The New York Times Lipksy's paintings are represented in twenty-five public collections, including The Whitney Museum, The Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Harvard's Fogg Art Museum.
