About the Item
This painting is heavily layered and its surface is treated as a “wall”, a surface onto which messages, mottos, graffiti, posters and notices can be written or drawn. On these paintings messages of tolerance abound but also references to war and a racial killing that happened near the gallery some years ago. These “walls” reflecting the voice of the people and the reality of the nation are partially covered with a uniform blue sky and the green vegetation of England with its plants/flowers in the colour of the UK flag. The dichotomy between appearances and reality is thus emphasised
