About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Paul England' (American, 1918-1988) and painted circa 1965. With old label, verso, bearing title, 'Gutenburg'. Framed in a period white-painted, wood-strip frame. Framed dimensions: 37.5 x 1.75 x 49.25 inches. Born in Oklahoma, Paul England received his Bachelors at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (1940) before studying at New York's Art Students League (1943-1946). He subsequently moved to Paris where he studied at Zadkine Studio, (1948-49) before earning his Masters at the University of Tulsa (1959). England was appointed Professor of Art at Hofstra University in 1959, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. The artist's work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Joslyn Museum and the New York Public Library, among others. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960. Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s.
