About the Item

Artist: Lloyd Martin Title: Folio 8 Size: 66 x 72” Year: 2016 American artist Lloyd Martin, known internationally for his rhythmically constructed abstract painting, continues his engagement with color and line in this outstanding body of work. Critic John Goodman wrote that Martin's paintings "achieve a Mondrianesque climax of rhythm." And it is this sense of movement, of rhythm, of flow that delights the eye as it is drawn along the forms and juxtapositions of bright-hued lush colors that are characteristic of the artist's recent work. Lloyd Martin is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. The art world press has often covered his work and he has been the recipient of many fellowships in painting as well as two in drawing, revealing his heightened awareness of line and form. That skill is evident in his Landfall Press series of prints in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

'Menemsha' by Anthony Dyke, Oil on Canvas Painting
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 38" x 48" oil on canvas painting is by Boston-based artist Anthony Dyke. This abstract composition utilizes a dynamic arrangement of geometric planes and chromatic contrasts. The upper half of the canvas is dominated by a patchwork of interlocking rectangles and squares in saturated hues—forest green, cerulean blue, ochre, and sky blue. The interaction between cool and warm tones, especially the adjacency of the cerulean and orange segments, creates chromatic vibration and visual depth. The orange square is visually animated by vertical drips of ultramarine, which disrupt the otherwise rigid linearity and inject a gestural spontaneity into the composition. This juxtaposition between controlled structure and expressive mark-making recalls the dialogue between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. The presence of paint drips nods to the performative legacy of action painting while remaining confined within geometric borders. The bottom left introduces triangular forms in black and midnight blue, whose sharp angles contrast the rectilinear dominance above. Meanwhile, a large crimson and rose-pink field in the bottom right corner anchors the composition and introduces a field of atmospheric warmth. The application of paint varies—some fields are matte and uniform, contributing to a graphic clarity, while others subtly reveal brushwork or underlying texture, enhancing the material presence of the painted surface. This oscillation between optical purity and painterly tactility gives the work a layered sensibility. Anthony Dyke was born in Norwich, Vermont and attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University earning a BFA and MFA in painting. As an artist and arts educator, he relocated from New York City to his down¬town Oklahoma City studio, working there for two decades before returning to Boston in 2020. Coming from VERMONT where the seasons are distinctly different from one another. My shift from a pastoral setting to an urban environment set up a dichotomy in my work, both visual and emotional. I have an extensive education in painting, photography, graphic design and figure sculpture. These mediums intersect in my work through many years of creating artworks and currently speak to my interest in abstract painting. During my senior year in the BFA Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, my large painting “Natole” was chosen by Frank Stella (the juror) into the highly competitive and prestigious Dana Pond...
