About the Item

Untitled (Capricci Series) is a mixed colored artwork realized by the contemporary Italian artist Pier Paolo Calzolari in 1982. Oil and tempera on board. Photo-certificate by Fondazione Calzolari in Fossombrone Provenance: M. Knoedler, Zurich; Private Collection, Rome Pier Paolo Calzolari, born in 1943, lives and works between Portugal and Italy. He trained in Bologna where he held his first solo exhibition in 1965 at the Bentivoglio Study Room. From the following year he abandoned the traditional pictorial techniques and began to use common objects and materials – even if not in the artistic field – such as fire, ice, lead, tin, salt, moss, tobacco which, in this way, knew a second life. Between 1967, the year he moved to Urbino, and 1972 Calzolari moved between Paris, New York and Berlin and matured his artistic project by establishing the parameters of his plastic vocabulary. In this period Calzolari is merged with the Arte Povera movement and his writing The ideal house (1968) is considered by some to be one of the essential statements of this movement. During his stay in Urbino he also works in the sphere of dance, interested in the study of the relationships between space, body and time, and thus giving new development to his performative work. The aesthetic dimension of Calzolari – which takes shape through paintings, sculptures, texts, sound recordings, videos, performances, the involvement of people and animals, architecture and light, and a profound diversification of materials. Starting in 1972, the artist focuses on the study of painting in a deeply unconventional way by juxtaposing pictorial signs with real objects, such as small paper boats or small trains moving along endlessly repeated paths. In these works he prefers to use new “supports” such as flannel or cardboard sheets glued on the canvas. However, his painting often remains tied to the physical involvement of people. He will be present at the Venice Biennale Internazionale d’Arte in the years 1978, 1980 and 1990. In 1992 he takes part in Documenta IX in Kassel. In the eighties he returned to traditional pictorial works with abstractions of a metaphysical and existential matrix, which were already previously present together with emotional dimensions. In 1994 an important retrospective was dedicated to him at the Jeu de Paume National Gallery in Paris and the Rivoli Castle in Turin. Continuing to explore his interest in light, matter and space-time through sculpture, installation and performance – as in the happenings created since 1966, in which he encourages viewers to become interpreters of what he will define as “activation of space “- Calzolari has been making paintings and drawings since the 1960s which, although less well known, represent a characteristic and a fundamental component of his practice. Works that outline a reflection on the relationships between color, shape, object and environment, also in reference to the experimentation of twentieth-century plastic values In his paintings and drawings Calzolari has in fact retraced and freely compared elements and apparently antithetical concepts such as natural materials and pictorial representation, abstraction and figuration, visual and performative dimension, space-time of the work and the environment in which it is inserted, reshaping it.
