About the Item

Pierre Marie Brisson is a French painter known for his Iconographic style. His work appropriates the forms, concepts, and imagery of art history. Spanning from prehistoric art to Rococo and Modernism, his work blur the lines of authorship and reference. This piece is a pertinent example of his abstract series where he incorporates mixed media and oils to unearth textures that mimic a historic time telling a story through gestural lines and bold choices of color. Comes displayed in a modern light gold metal frame and is signed on lower right and verso. Art measures 39 x 32 inches Frame measures 40 x 33 inches Pierre Marie was born in 1955 in Orléans, France and knew by the age of 14 that he was an artist. Although he never had formal art school training, he did have a teacher who encouraged him to follow his dreams. As a young man, he was inspired by, and worked with, several artists including Bernard Saby, Bram Van Velde and James Coignard, essentially learning his craft as an apprentice. As a painter, Brisson integrates French decorative aestheticism – evident from Manet to Matisse – into modernist Primitivism. Using a collage technique, Brisson combines various elements in his compositions, imitating the rough surface of an ancient wall, the craquelure of old paint, the decorative pattern of wallpaper and woven fabric. Brisson’s art is avant-garde and ingenious, yet timeworn and antique. It is skillfully crafted with the best materials, yet part of its success rests with the fact that his works are fashioned from the discarded fragments of our disposable civilization, rescued and revitalized by the hand of an artist. He uses several subjects and motifs repeatedly. Art historian Jennifer Katanic observed: “His work unravels the mystery of art through a careful reflection on familiar motifs. Matisse is recognized through his palm fronds and dancers, Degas by his ballerinas, the masters of Ancient Greece in a trio of athletes and the feminine graces. Each motif is transformed through process and materiality into a living picture. Jasper Johns accomplished something similar in his use of the American flag; immediate recognition of something known freed the viewer to experience the making of art more directly. And that in turn, allowed the viewer to figure out more readily what exactly the artist was accomplishing through his choices.” Brisson has an extensive exhibition history, primarily in Europe and his work can be found in the permanent collections of institutions throughout the world. He has a studio in Paris as well as one in the ancient city of Aigues Morte in the south of France. He spends most of his time painting in the south and can often be found working on his boat as it drifts down the Rhône River in the warm summer months. PROVENANCE: Estate of a Private collection Dania Beach, Florida; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"Nature and Humans Relationships –Embrace– 30F" Abstract Expressionist Painting
By Suki Maguire
Located in New York, NY
Unorthodox; yet effective, Suki treats us to a series of works that tantalizes the imagination with bold strokes of dark and light, hinting at shapes both human and ethereal and pulling us through the two-dimensional surface of the canvas into the mysterious depths of a multidimensional world. Her works resonate with strong, masculine strokes, vibrant colors, and passionate themes. The common factor is that when looking at her pieces you can spend some time letting your mind play within each painting and you'll come away with a much richer understanding of what Suki Maguire's art has to show at a simple glance. This painting is signed by the artist lower right, and titled and dated on verso. Art measures 28.5 x 35.75 inches There is a great potential for discovery in Maguire's world of symbols, but a passing glance will not do, you have to allow your gaze to linger on this part and that of each painting so that your subconscious will have the opportunity to retrieve the elusive forms that seem to be hiding within the more obvious shapes. This holds true even in those works that incorporate letters of the Korean or Latin alphabet, which serve as glyphs bearing some symbolic meaning that goes beyond the mere representation of sound. She has exhibited internationally in Seoul, Nantucket, New York and Italy. Her styles and materials have ranged from realism to abstract, from water and oil colors to acrylics and coffee grounds.
