About the Item

A mid-century French Abstract Expressionist oil on board painting of an orange seller by Raphael Arnal. Presented in a gilt wood frame. Signed and dated 1949 to the bottom right by the artist and annotated 'Vence 1949, La Vendeuse d'Oranges' to the back. This vibrant artwork is a striking example of abstract expressionism, skillfully blending bold colours and dynamic forms. Dominated by rich blues, fiery reds, and warm yellows, the painting captures the essence of emotional intensity. The central figure, depicted with broad, sweeping strokes, sits aside a table burgeoning with oranges, which is rendered in burst of vibrant orange and yellow, suggesting vitality and movement. The background is a tumultuous swirl of textured layers, creating a sense of depth and chaos. This interplay of colour and form draws the viewer into a contemplative space, evoking both personal introspection and universal themes of beauty and complexity. The piece is framed in an ornate gold frame, which contrasts with the raw energy of the painting, enhancing its visual impact. This artwork is a testament to the power of abstraction to communicate deep emotion and artistic vision. The painter Raphael Arnal (1906-1963) was a Provençal expressionist artist, he attended the Montpellier School of Fine Arts and exhibited in Montpellier, Avignon, Salon de Provence, Paris and Marseille among others. He settled in Marseille for a long time in the Pintade district, often represented in his work and then finally in Vence towards the end of his life. He was a great friend of Max Jacob (the poet and artist who taught Picasso to speak French) with whom he often corresponded and this correspondence was subsequently published by the magazine 'Massilia'. A complex personality of modern art, his painting is marked by a strong expression and intense colours, His work is still highly appreciated in the arts community of Marseille.

Abstract Expressionist Composition on an Orange Field - Oil on Canvas
By Peter Witwer
Located in Soquel, CA
Multi-Color Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer A bold mid-century abstract expressionist piece exploding with heavy texture and vivid color by San Francisco artist Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). Darker colors are layered atop each other, building up from white, yellow, and red through greens and blues into dark purple and black. The composition is surrounded by an orange field, creating a strong contrast. Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of Witwer pieces. Displayed in a vintage wood frame. Linen size: 30"H x 16"W Framed size: 31.25"W x 17.25"W Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Then to a San Francisco Collector and then to Robert Azensky fine Art Born George Peter...
