About the Item
Presenting a stunning extra-large French abstract acrylic painting by French artist Raphaëlle Pia (1942-). This contemporary artwork exhibits a remarkably vivid quality, achieved through the harmonious interplay of a pale color palette and bold, large brushstrokes.
The painting is countersigned. ‘R. Pia’ is signed in the bottom right corner of the canvas, and 'Raphaëlle PIA' is signed on the reverse side of the canvas. It is dated 1987, is titled ‘ ("Guanorgile") "Guanos II" ’, and its' medium is noted to be 'acrylique s/ toile (et technique mixte)' which translates to 'acrylic paint on canvas and mixed technique'. There is also a reference to a Parisian street that is partially crossed out; 'chemin du Parc de Charonne 75020 - Paris'.
Artist bio:
Raphaëlle Pia was born in the French region of Loire. When she was 20 years old, she moved to Paris to study at the University of Plastic Arts and the Beaux-arts where she discovered her interest in painting. Captivated by the cultural excitement of Paris she found a studio and settled there. She has been teaching art up until 2002, and hereafter she devoted herself to painting.
She is an artist who prefers to paint nature. The subjects of her paintings are often captured in the countryside or forests. The compositions of her paintings are presented and painted by combining figuration, abstraction, and strange surface effects, far from the usual models. Surprising the viewer's eye and opening the door to new sensory possibilities is the basis of her work.
The painting has a new and bespoke frame. A minimalistic and non-profile frame design in white-lye-treated ash wood was chosen as it subtly complements the painting's color palette and the naturalistic feel of the painting. The framed dimensions are 167cm (H) x 194cm (W) x 4cm (D) / 65,7in (H) x 76,4in (W) x 1,6in (D).

Raphaelle Pia
Raphaëlle Pia was born in the Loire to immigrant parents of the Spanish Civil War. After a year at the Beaux-Arts in Grenoble, JM Pirot workshop, she received training at the center for art, Claude Bernard. Pia then settled in Paris. During the first year of her profession, she studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the Couturier studio. She paints regularly. Pia first started teaching in 1985 at Auguste Renoir High School of Graphic Arts in Paris, where she taught until 2002. Since then, Pia has devoted herself to painting alone. Painting for Raphaëlle Pia is like playing with the different parts of a toy as a child would.

Calvert Coggeshall worked as an abstract painter and interior designer primarily in Maine and New York City. From 1951 to 1978, he exhibited regularly with the Betty Parsons Gallery, and later with its successor, the Jack Tilton Gallery.
Born in Whitesboro, New York, Coggeshall started his career as an interior designer, working on commissions for clients in the New York City area. He later consulted on the interior designs for Henry Dreyfuss' line of cruise/cargo ships called American Export, popular from the 1940s through the 1960s.
