The painting is rich and complex with a palette and surface quality that warms and harmonises his geometrically constructed planes of colour. With technical and stylistic qualities reminiscent of the Cubists, closer study reveals the artist’s signature motifs and unique style as he explores an infinite variety of abstract cubist shapes, compelling the viewer to see the world through his fractured lens.
Robert Marc has exhibited in France and internationally, including shows in New York and Tokyo, developing a wide following throughout Europe, Japan and the United States until his untimely death in 1993. With a strong record on the secondary market, today Marc’s paintings form part of important private and public collections throughout the world.
Biography:
Robert Marc (1943–1993) was a French post-Cubist artist born in Auxerre.
Marc spent his youth in Switzerland before returning to France to Study art. He studied in Paris during the 1960s and was witness to the social upheavals of the period including the 1968 student riots. His work was inspired during his time in Paris through exposure to several influences including: the museums of Europe, that enhanced his artistic knowledge, the music of John Coltrane, and also African Art that he saw in the galleries on Rue Guenegaud.
However, he preferred the solitude of the countryside, and having finished his studies, he returned to his native Burgundy where he produced most of his work in his studio there.
He was discovered in the early 1980s by the New York dealer Barry Friedman. Friedman bought a work by Marc from a Parisian gallery that was unsigned and at the time he was unaware of its authorship; as Friedman reveals: "At the time, Marc didn't sign his paintings, as he believed that the signature interfered with the image". These images were influenced by Russian Avant-Garde artists Malevich and Rodchenko, rather than the western European cubists such as Picasso and Braque.
The meeting with Friedman was decisive. His first solo exhibition was in 1988 in Toulouse, and the same year in New York. The last one was in 1995 in Metz. During his career, Marc exhibited in France and internationally including shows in New York and Tokyo. He worked up until his death in 1993.[6] Marc's wife continued to exhibit his paintings in her own gallery, Galerie du Ressort, until 1998.

Robert Marc
Robert Marc was born in Auxerre, France, in 1943. He spent his youth in Switzerland and returned to France as a young man determined to enter art school. Like generations before and after him, he discovered painting not in school, but in the great museums of Europe. He considered the established masters his real teachers and gained particular inspiration from the work of Russian artists Malevich and Rodchenko. Paris of the 1960s was a seminal time in Marc’s life, with its stimulations ranging from the jazz of John Coltrane to the African art in the galleries on Rue Guenegaud. Unlike many of his peers, however, Marc deliberately avoided the limelight of Parisian life, content to spend all his time quietly working in the French countryside. His paintings are rich and complex with a palette and surface quality that warm and harmonize with his geometrically constructed planes of color. With technical and stylistic qualities reminiscent of the Cubists, the artist’s signature motifs and unique style are revealed with close study, as he explores an infinite variety of abstract cubist shapes, compelling the viewer to see the world through his fractured lens. Robert Marc exhibited in France and internationally, including shows in New York and Tokyo, developing a wide following throughout Europe, Japan and the United States until his untimely death in 1993. With a strong record on the secondary market, Marc’s paintings today form part of important private and public collections throughout the world. (Biography provided by Stern Pissarro Gallery)

Metro Pictures, New York
Famous as a collector of American junk, including a trove of thrift store paintings once sought by art collector Charles Saatchi, Jim Shaw draws on his vast stores of pop cultural artifacts in his work. The My Mirage (1986–91) project comprises nearly 170 drawings, silkscreens, photographs, sculptures, films, and paintings based on a Shaw stand-in called Billy, who grows from childhood to psychosis to born-again Christianity. Billy exists amid a 1960s and ’70s visual overload of pulp novels, comic books, records, and psychedelic posters. The artist’s Oism project, initiated in the late 1990s, explores his fictional religion through media including video installations (recalling both Busby Berkeley musicals and 1980s aerobics videos) and found paintings in the “Oist style.” Shaw’s richly layered practice takes liberally from both art history (Art Brut, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst) and America’s vernacular of coffeemakers and zombie films.
