About the Item

Rubén Rodrigo – “Derrière le Viridien”, 2020 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: H 180 × W 146 cm Year: 2020 Signed: Yes, signed and dated by the artist on the reverse Condition: Excellent Description: Derrière le Viridien (2020) is a large-scale oil painting by Rubén Rodrigo Silguero, one of the most distinctive voices in Spanish contemporary painting. Rodrigo’s work emerges as a direct heir to modernist tradition, conceived as a process of purification that seeks to eliminate all that is not essential to the pictorial medium—namely, imitation and literary content. Drawing upon the theoretical lineage from Lessing’s division between the arts of space and the arts of time, and the critical legacy of Clement Greenberg, Rodrigo’s practice revisits the principles of modernism through a contemporary lens. His abstract compositions, resonant with chromatic vibration and meditative structure, evoke a dialogue with the Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s, while simultaneously reintroducing elements historically devalued by modernism: symbolic intention, scenic presence, temporal register, and transcendence. Working often in diptychs, polyptychs, or extensive series, Rodrigo challenges the notion of the “last painting” that once defined the minimalist culmination of artists such as Robert Ryman or Ad Reinhardt. In this context, Derrière le Viridien encapsulates his exploration of painting as an open, spiritual process—one that is both rigorous and emotionally charged. Rodrigo’s work also engages in a continuous dialogue with art history. From El Greco, he inherits a fascination for expressive distortion and spiritual intensity—qualities that critics have revisited since Manuel B. Cossío’s 1908 monograph. His modern affinities include American Abstract Expressionism, European lyrical abstraction, and the gestural neo-figuration of Francis Bacon, among others. Provenance: Directly from the artist’s studio. Authenticity: Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by L.A Studio.
