About the Item
Hammered and patinated copper
Unique piece

About this work, Ryo Hikosaka says : "Questioning the ephemeral by highlighting the illusory and inconstant nature of perception. I sculpted a black stone effect in copper, imitating both fabric and stone. Faced with this work on textures, and the play on relief and plane, the viewer's gaze hesitates once again. The uncertainty of perception and the deliberate ambiguity allow him to enter into my own questioning."
Ryo Hikosaka is graduated of the Beaux Arts de Tokyo and the prestigious École Boulle of Paris. A Parisian for over ten years, he launched his career as a freelance artist after working as a patina specialist at Atelier Steaven Richard and for the Cartier House. He works passionately with metal to make it speak and question us. The uniqueness of his work lies in this balance between classical fine art techniques and his Japanese sensibility. Several of his works are already in Japanese collections.

Ryo Hikosaka was born in Japan in 1985. Spotted by the Tokyo University of the Arts for his remarkable mastery of the hammering technique and his profound sense of Japanese art, he was selected in 2009 to represent the university as part of an experimental exchange with the École Boulle in Paris. In addition to his celebrity status at both institutions, Ryo Hikosaka graduated from the École Boulle in 2010, and in 2012 earned a Master of Arts in metal hammering from Tokyo University of the Arts. Seduced and inspired by French culture and the creative spirit of Paris, Ryo Hikosaka decided to move to Paris in 2012 and became a specialist at the Steaven Richard workshop..
But Ryo Hikosaka has always seen himself as more than just a craftsman. as a mere craftsman, for he sees in metal, its shape and patina, dimensions relating to art, perception and illusion. He therefore puts all his talent and technique at the service of his own works, in order to make metal speak for itself. He believes that technique can easily be likened to language, in that both bring our thoughts to life. Beyond their curves, tonality and materiality, his works exist because of their artistic and sensitive essence. His patina is the intuitive expression of his soul, and the metal plate is the artistic medium that enables him, using techniques invented by himself, to work on patinas in the manner of a painter. The uniqueness of his work lies in this balance between classical fine art techniques and his Japanese sensibility. His main exhibitions 2025 - Paris revelations

About the artist:
Ruth A. Wall was born in Wyoming on September 10, 1917 but moved to a homestead on an Indian reservation in Uintah, Utah in 1919. After graduating from high school at age 16 she left home to attend college, graduating at age 20 and began teaching high school at age 21.
She moved to Los Angeles where she became an Army materials inspector during WWII. She moved to Northern California and became a pilot, but entered the service as a WAC. Here she trained as a physical therapist and became an officer. She remained in the service until 1949.
In 1950 she entered the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, studying there until leaving for Paris in 1952 where she moved into the Academie Frochot. Returning to the CSFA in 1955 she worked as an artist until she had to take a job to make a living in 1957. Most of her work in printmaking was done in 1952, before leaving for Paris. They are, for the most part, gestural, Abstract Expressionist lithographs, done on the press at the CSFA at night after everyone had gone home. Her teachers were James Budd Dixon, Robert McChesney and, after 1955, Nate Oliviera and fellow students included James Kelly...
