Sam Francis, Ace Gallery, Beverly Hills, 2003. In 1960s, Sam Francis went through a period of intense traveling, after eight years in Paris, he went from one workshop to another between Japan, Mexico, United States and Paris. All this traveling will have an impact in his artistic research. His visit to Japan coincided with an opening of white space in much of Sam Francis's work, as it is the case in this artwork. Marked by Zen Buddhism, he appropriated notions of empty and full from Asian ink painting. Sam Francis have privileged the technique of painting on paper, first used for its convenience during a long hospitalization, the paper then remained a recurrent medium in his pictorial work. Furthermore, the paper represents a constant need for this traveling artist, a "research in intimacy and intensity rather than size". Sam Francis (1923-1994) was an American painter, often associated with the works of leading Abstract Expressionist painters like Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still and Helen Frankenthaler, and was also involved in Europe's similar movement called Art Informel, which he got involved with as he lived in Paris in the 1950s.
