This mesmerizing work displays Francis's signature technique of juxtaposing vibrant, painterly washes of color against vast expanses of white. While the center of the canvas remains almost completely empty save for incidental splatters of paint, the edges are alive with bursts of saturated primary hues, creating a tension between the void at the center and the colorful borders. This structural contrast encourages the viewer to contemplate the delicate balance between fullness and emptiness, between color and space. A giant of the Abstract Expressionist movement and true cosmopolitan artist, Francis was deeply influenced by his international experiences. During the 1950s and 1960s, he traveled extensively, establishing studios in Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo, each of which informed his artistic vision. The Edge Paintings series, to which this work belongs, was deeply influenced by his time in Japan, where he became captivated by the interplay of empty space and form seen in traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Sam Francis’s life was as vibrant and varied as his paintings. Born in San Mateo, California, in 1923, his journey as an artist began under extraordinary circumstances. After being diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis in his 20s, Francis spent three years encased in a full-body cast. It was during this time of immobility that he taught himself to paint, launching a prolific career that spanned over five decades. Known for his large-scale, color-drenched canvases, Francis became one of the most successful painters of his time, starring in over 100 solo exhibitions and commanding the highest prices of any living painter in the late 1950s to mid-1960s.
Today his works can be seen in the most important public collections of modern of art, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate in London. His legacy extends beyond the canvas: he founded a publishing company, a holistic medical research center, and even a wind energy company that is still operational today. When he passed in 1994, Francis left behind not only a staggering body of more than 10,000 works but also a lasting impact on both the art world and the broader cultural landscape.

Sam Francis
Sam Francis was an American artist known for his exuberantly colorful, large-scale abstract paintings. His practice incorporated elements from Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, Impressionism and Eastern philosophy to create a unique style of painterly abstraction.
Influenced by Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still, Francis is more closely associated to the work of Helen Frankenthaler, as he was more interested in the formal arrangement of the picture plane than the expressivity of the individual artist. “Painting is about the beauty of space and the power of containment,” Francis once reflected.
Born on June 25, 1923 in San Mateo, California, Francis briefly served in the US Air Force during World War II but was injured during a test flight. Returning to California, he received his BA and MA from UC Berkeley in botany and psychology before beginning to pursue a career in art. The artist traveled widely during his career, and he was closely aligned with the Art Informel movement while living abroad in Paris during the 1950s.
Francis died on November 4, 1994 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 71. He was a founding trustee of Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and his paintings can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, among others.

This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition.
Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement.
Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. The sheets that make up this project evoke a dreamlike world of seabeds. The painter submerges landscapes, forests, materials and terrestrial objects under the cold and silent ocean currents. A feeling of weightlessness dominates the viewer, while the moon floats between anemones, sea urchins and posidonia forests. The blue-green darkness is broken up with nuclei and horizons of light, contrasting with the ambiguous and mysterious atmosphere of the compositions.
THECHNIQUE
The work has been carried out with an innovative technique, where the fluidized oil is transformed into an undulating sea, to create impossible shapes on paper, which are later outlined by the airbrush, the palette knife and the brush. A totally personal bet of the author, who has done an exercise in free painting, with an explosion of contrasts between the real world and abstraction.
