About the Item

Broad brush strokes of pink, blue, and yellow highlighted by dashes of white dance across the canvas in this new painting by Scott Pattinson. Working from his studios in a renovated barn and a cabin in Muskoka, Pattinson uses intense colour palettes to convey emotion in his expressive abstracts. “…There is much more of a direct conversation in the elements that are happening in the (abstract) painting so every brush stroke becomes more important.” Scott Pattinson He studied architecture and urban design at the University of Toronto and completed a BES in Urban Design from the University of Waterloo. Since 2005, he has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows in galleries across Canada, including a 2014 retrospective at Gallery Stratford. His work is held at Gallery Stratford as well as in numerous corporate and private collections in Canada, Dubai, Italy, France and the US. Scott Pattinson is represented exclusively by the Oeno Gallery. Framed dimensions are 25 x 31 inches.

    This highly gestural and drip composition on paper balances a kaleidoscope of colour -- grape, magenta, orange, gold, green -- with areas of black and grey. It is a muscular explosion inspired by the classic Greek poem, the Odyssey, which charts the journey of hero Odysseus home to Ithaca after the 10 year Trojan war. This work on paper is currently unframed. However, it can be mounted on panel and framed or framed behind glass. Adam Cohen born in New Jersey in 1959, studied with artist Lilian Marzell, a friend of Willem de Kooning.     Fritz Bultman (1919-1985) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and collagist and a member of the New York School of artists. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Germany to join the Bauhaus at the age of 16. There, he was acquainted with Maria Hofmann, the wife of Hans Hofmann, which initiated a move to New York to study under his guidance. Bultman set himself apart from other Abstract Expressionists with his meticulously organized abstract compositions, use of sculpture, and the adoption of collage as a core practice. In 1950, Fritz Bultman and 27 other distinguished artists signed a letter protesting the conservative nature of the work selected for a forthcoming national exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The signees of this historic letter were identified as, the “Irascibles,” resulting in the majority achieving international acclaim as Abstract Expressionist artists including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among others.
